Kinky Goes Pop!

Canal boats, VW meets and now music festivals. This weekend Kinky Melons Retro Boutique hit the road and set up shop at Indie Tracks, an annual celebration of all things Indie Pop.

Indietracks is an intimate, non-corporate music festival featuring acts from across the globe. Now in the 7th year & located at the Midland Railway Centre part of the proceeds help fund the museum's conservation.

Possibly the only festival in the world where you can ride a steam train whilst being serenaded by live music.

There's even an old British Rail carriage converted into a real ale bar.

Located in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside with lots of perfectly preserved artefacts from the golden age of steam.

Indie kids are a well behaved bunch. These vintage cases wouldn't stay put for long at your average music festival.

Doesn't that sky look ominous?

Here we are, up and ready for business in the merch* tent.

(*Hipster speak for merchandise, I'm down with the kids now.)

That orange psychedelic 1960s dress was sold within 10 minutes of opening.

Although we're old hands at festival-going being crew is a totally different experience. Ten hour shifts made it pretty much impossible to see any of the music (although we had a prime spot for the live acoustic sets in the marquee) but we did manage to catch Camera Obscura after some particularly vicious lightning forced us to abandon the marquee on Saturday night.

We were on site before the gates opened every day, a festival without revellers is a pretty weird experience.

Best veg pakoras ever!

A fellow crew member - one of the drug dogs

The Chapel Stage

Indietracks is such a quirky festival - there's even an opportunity to pet owls.

A tad dishevelled after a day's work.

So, how did it go? It fecking rocked! Kinky Melon now has the seal of approval from both festival goers & band members alike and Gilbert returned a whole lot lighter. We spent time with some fantastic people and met a few blog readers, too!

It's that shirt again! Jon's shorts started life as old man trousers from a jumble sale & he altered them.

Next time you catch an Indie Pop act in the States, Malaysia, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Spain or the UK there's a good chance they'll be wearing a piece of Kinky Melon vintage.

1960s go-go top (£6.50, Second To None, Walsall), vintage patchwork maxi (£6.19, eBay) and a load of junk, vintage and Indian jewellery
We're knackered, dazed and confused right now. We've just under two weeks before Kinky Melon hits the road again (catch us HERE) so there's a furious fortnight of hunting down stock to replace the heap we've sold but that starts tomorrow. Right now it's a delivery curry, rum and coke in a proper glass, a hot bath and an early night.

See you soon!

  24. Now that looks like it would be my kind of festival! The location and the quirky vibe and the good behaviour are all selling it to me - oh and great shopping at Kinky Melon too!
So pleased to hear you sold a shed load, you will have to car boot and jumble and chazza shop like a demon now to fill the gaps. But it's such a brilliant way to make a living, I know you will enjoy every minute.
Fabulous photos, I am wishing I could have a drink in that railway carriage, eat pakoras, pet the owls, pat the drug dog, and hang out with the best-dressed vintage sellers ever! You look amazing, not at all dishevelled, love that patchwork maxi and the fringed go-go top. And Jon is such a cool dude!
Enjoy your curry and your rum, you've earned them! xxxxx

  30. And another successful festival! You guys are making a killing out there, and it's bloody awesome to see!
Indie Tracks seems like a festival up my alley; a little quirky and not as mental and over crowded as Glasto. You both look totally scrumptious!!! The old man shorts are gorgeous, and your go go top gives me the hot hot hots! Schwing!
I don't doubt you'll be able to stock up nicely for the next one! Rock ON!

  31. Looks like the weekend was a success on all fronts: social, shopping and musical. It's great that Kinky Melon has taken off so well - you deserve it! I reckon that people are more than happy to buy from fellow vintage enthusiasts rather than someone who is in it only to make a fast buck. Keep up the rocking and rolling with The Melon! Xxx

  32. Oh my. That brooding photo of Jon in his cowboy shirt has sent me all peculiar.
Looks like a lot of fun and I'm glad that amazing skirt got an outing again. I do love it. xxx

  33. That looks so much fun! Definitely my kind of thing. Although I've just caught up with your Glasto post, and that looked amazing too. I did watch The Stones on the BBC, and thought about you. They were absolutely brilliant, you must have been beside yourself seeing them live.

You're obviously working hard, but what a great way to make a living. And you always look fabulous! Will try to catch up with you soon in person.

Oh, and hasn't the weather been wonderful, I'm loving every minute!

  34. oh i cant wait till festival season! I think the best shop i ever saw at a festival was one that was selling an assortment of hats - mainly costume type ones. The hipsters loved that one! And the recent 'splendor in the grass festival' over the weekend had a Top Shop Pop Up - very overdone in my mind to mix high street hipster and with Australia's hippy capital. Can you just pop down here to flog your wares? thanks!

  35. Fabulous weekend all round by the looks of things! And you two manage to look so glam in every situation... never ceases to amaze me :-)

  44. "A tad dishevelled"? Nup, nope, not one bit sweetie. You might have been feeling knocked out by your marathon merch-fest, but you look amazing! I'm so glad KM has its toes firmly planted in festival land, the pair of you work so hard to make it a success and I'm sure it's not only down to your fantastic stock, but to sexaciously fabulous YOU!! xoxoxox

  48. It all looks brilliant Vix and you look totally in your element, love the close up of your Spanish lady look. I was lusting after the long dress with orange flowers on it, as usual I wish I'd been there to have a rummage. I would have liked to see Camera Obscura too, maybe it was meant to be for you to take a break at that point. As Annie says, what a great way to make a living, doing something you love. xx

  49. So glad the festival went well for you both. You look amazing as always and Jon looks super handsome ... I am worried about those owls though - tethered at the ankles - doesn't seem right...

  54. I had no idea Indietracks was so near to us. I know this station, steam train, tin tabernacle etc, although in a very different context to this.

Those pakoras must have been good if you approved them. Kinky Melons is going mad! How wonderful that you sold so much stock and that it is going out into the world, travelling all over, in exactly the spirit of you and Jon. It is so exciting! Hope you made lots of dosh so that that trip to Croatia can become reality. It's that shirt again! :) And that lovely patchwork skirt.

    Get shopping kids! xxxxxx

  59. Kinky Melon is having one helluva successful summer! Any festival that has steam trains, owls and cute little food trucks with pakoras is alright in my book. Of course the hipsters loved you, how could they not? You and Jon are on the road to fame and fortune (in Gilbert, of course)as the coolest vintage sellers ever.
