Festival Madness - Glasto 2013

What a week! The Glastonbury Festival is always amazing and, what with half decent weather and Rolling Stones headlining, this year was the best yet.

After a four hour drive down south, we set up camp, chatted to our new neighbours and decimated our rum & pretzel supply.

I knew my St Michael 1960s swimsuit would come in handy, headband made by me for Glastonbury 2010

After a lazy Wednesday in the sun we packed our bags with booze and headed off to the Stone Circle for singing and dancing & fireworks around the camp fire,

before witnessing the opening ceremony.

I was bastard freezing by midnight but far too excited to bother with a coat. My chazza shop feather boa got admired by a finalist from The Voice - aren't I special?

On Thursday I managed to parade around in my floral finery before the wind got up, the heavens opened and we scuttled back to Gilbert. I'm linking to Patti's Visible Monday as no-one could miss me!

Wearing a me-made bikini top and a '70s patchwork maxi from eBay, Ganesh pendant (handmade by Krista-licious)

We're hardy festival goers so it takes more than a bit of a downpour to curtail our fun. We waterproofed up and met some mates down at the Salon Carousel for boozing and chat.

Salon Carousel's in The Unfairground, a broken down psychedelic circus and go-go show featuring Happy Monday's Bez's Acid House. I'd bumped into Bez in the campervan camp site earlier but I was far too shy to ask for a picture.

On Friday Glasto kicked off proper and despite 12 hours of rain the mud was barely worth worrying about. It turned out to be the only day wellies were necessary.

We met up with our friend Jon to see Enter Shikari (disappointing), Billy Bragg and Don Letts.

Wearing Kiss Me Kitty leggings, Edie Pop designed Vix bag and a 1960s fun fur coat borrowed from the stockroom.

Freezing my arse off during Seasick Steve's performance. The excitement proved too much for Jon's trusty digital camera and it packed up just before the Arctic Monkeys set.

Thank goodness for mobile phones. Jon's captured a bit of the amazing The Bombay Royale on Saturday afternoon. We also saw Billy Bragg again (not intentionally, we were too lazy to move) and Laura Mvula.

Here's a taster of The Rolling Stones madness. We got to the Pyramid Stage 5 hours before they came on (that's how immense Glastonbury is). We rocked out to Elvis Costello and Primal Scream in the meantime.  Apparently there were over 100,000 spectators in the arena. (If you watch any of the BBC footage we're standing next to the red flare during Sympathy For The Devil.)

Festival earrings from Queen Helga, 1960s pink crochet poncho (from a car boot sale) worn over a 1970s maxi dress.

What can I say? I've been going to gigs for 33 years and those two-and-a-half hours blew my mind.
I wasn't too emotional to continue partying till the early hours though, catching another set by The Bombay Royale in the Pussy Parlour club tent, swigging gin and eating chips at 3am.

Miraculously Jon found a tatty old camera abandoned by a bin on the way back to camp. We stuck in our memory card and the picture quality was passable. This is Sunday afternoon at the Spirit of '71 stage, the best place for psychedelia and trippy weirdness.

1970s child's psychedelic cotton maxi (Ebay, 2005), floral crown (the fabulous Desiree

Not dressing in the standard festival uniform of designer wellies, cut-off Levis, a khaki parka and a plaited fringe tends to draw a lot of attention .... I love it!

The downside of having a camper van is that the camp site feels like miles away. At peak times it can take 2 hours to walk back but luckily our mates are campers so we can leave our coats and extra booze in their tents to save missing out on any action.

It was Lilly's first Glasto. Doesn't she look the part in her Roses tee?

During the day we saw John Otway and Space Ritual, had a picnic at the Farmer's Market and caught some of Sergio Mendes. We were too lazy to make it to Nick Cave or Evan Dando in time.

Mumford and Sons were headlining on Sunday night and we've seen them before and aren't that keen so went exploring alternative Glasto instead.

I've been pestering to go to the insect circus for years and finally got my way.

Block 9 (the post-apocalyptic city) with it's debauched gay bar were a sight to behold...

...and we nearly wet ourselves laughing playing with the old skool seaside style cut-outs.

After a dance in the post-apocalyptic disco we finished the evening around the camp fire. It was supposed to be an early-ish night but our intentions went to pot.

In true Glasto tradition we met up with the gang for a Ploughman's at the Riverside Inn in Cheddar. Four hours sleep and not a shower between us in 6 days, no wonder nobody wanted to sit next to us.

1970s Prova maxi (Misfit Sarah)

My other hip's knackered, I look like death and I can't get a comb through my hair and guess what? We'll be doing it all over again on Thursday at CamperJam. God help us.

Just as well I can't walk, I've a billion blog posts to catch up on.

See you soon!

I love your festival vibe and the pictures give me a taste of how would it be to be there! I'm glad you had a good time and maybe I'll be able to enjoy it too next time! xxx

  18. Thanks for the Glasto account. I've never been to a large festival and had no idea of the number of people and amount of space involved. Everyone else looks so drab. You're ability to look fabulous in the face of mud, lack of showering, etc. is inspiring.

(I love Nick Cave and Evan Dando too, I'm sorry that you missed them, but I understand how easy was to get overwhelmed by everything!).Your festival outfits are always my favourite inspiration for the summer and I feel so honoured that you bring the bag I did for you, so I can say that a little part of me was there with you!
Thank you for all the beautiful photos and videos!

  24. Looks like you had the best time! Looking so radiant and chic despite the weather (I particularly love that amazing made-by-you bikini top with the patchwork maxi, wow!). So glad you got to rock out to the Stones, and like you I'm a massive Nick Cave fan what a shame you missed him, but did see Primal Scream yay!
Your photos are so evocative of the cold, muddy, sunny fun!
As for Evan Dando, well I remember having a bit of a flirt with him in the 90s after one of his gigs and he was a bit of a sweetie but total stoner....

I think your festival attire is electrifying and I love that as always you stand out for your rainbowy goodness. Jon looks right in his element with his shirt off book in hand just chillin!

I love seeing you groove to the beats, your such a happy beautiful free spirit. And you doing it all again on Thursday?!? No rest for the wicked bad ass peeps! I think the only way I could do a festival is with you two veterans:). You are a model for giving life to the fullest! I have missed you dear it's not as prettier of a place without your presence.

6 days and no shower and you both still look hot, I'm not saying anything about the smell:)

Welcome home, looks like you had the most fabulous time.
I love to see you in all your colourful finery - someone above said how drab everyone else looks, apart from you, and it's true. I kept an eye out for you as I watched bits and pieces of the BBC coverage!
So pleased the Stones didn't disappoint, and that the whole festival was a mostly-dry wonderful success - roll on next year!

  56. Wow, the best Glasto ever. Must have been amazing. It looks enormous. We used to pitch up near the pyramid just over to the right a bit, and all our friends would find us, no worries. But that was over twenty years ago. Doesn't sound like it would happen now. I'm not sure I could cope with the crowds.

You on the other hand blossomed, in every way!!! I'm not surprised you were the headline attraction. I love you in your cozzie, in your patchwork skirt and pimped up bikini top and I LOVE you and Jon as Mr and Mrs Alien Ant Farm. So much fun down in Somerset (best county in England...hee hee). xxxxx

  58. What can I say other than wow, seriously wow it sounds EPIC. I admire you Vix I don't think I could physically keep going for that many days. I'd give it a crack, but not sure I could make he full duration.

Your outfits were all amazing of course and how utterly boring is description of others attire cut of Levi's, weeklies and khaki.......seriously how bloody boring.

Rest up my love and take care of the hip. I look forward to hearing more adventures, x

  62. Super amazingly fabulosity from one end to the other! Mondo envious to the power of a kabillion!

When I was pregnant I had a dream (was there never a more unpromising start to an anecdote than that?) that I went into labour unexpectedly and had to give birth in a shed on a railway siding with no one but Bez in attendance. And then I gave birth to a miniature baby who happily rode on the brim of my hat. Apparently my subconscious and Glasto are very similar places!

I love the video Jon took of you and your surprised but accepting face, meh, you're filming me, but I'm just going to get on with it. That flower bikini and the patchwork skirt are my favourite outfit, but they're all stunning and beautiful. No hunters, shorts, check shirts, wayfarers and straw panama hats for you! I saw a lot of that crap on the tv and knew you must be feeling very superior. Looks like an amazing year to have been there, so much going on. The post apocalyptic disco looks really intense! xxxx

  76. Oh wow! such funnnn!!! I always love the side shows at festivals. their so entertaining when there isn't any good bands on. We went to Harvest festival in November and they had a tent with "legs" and you walked into the tent through the vagina and inside were lesbian punk rockers! it was awesome. I wont explain what the exit was like but on the other side was another tent which was playing 60s bubble gum pop. Lots of fun!

  77. What a great read, had no idea Glasto was so huge or that there was so much to see. (insect circus?!) I hear it's gone all 'designer' now but pleased to see you didn't let the side down, you look the most ravishing thing there in that sea of drab. I missed the Stones on telly as I was on night shift but heard Keef on Radio 2, sounds like it was one to remember.

  83. I'm currently watching Glasto which I videoed off TV (how quaint!).
Mumford are irritating after a few minutes, Kenny Rogers wasn't too bad, Elvis was off-key, Vampire Weekend were great, Ben Howard ditto. For God's sake, are there no women singers in Britain?
Your eponymous bag is lovely by the way.
    Take care.

  84. Ahh this post brought back memories. I performed flamenco at Pussy Galore back in the day as well as Lost Vagueness (are they still around?) Though looks like the weather was not too bad. 12 hours of rain? Is that all? Must be a record!
It's a marvel how you always manage to look so glam camping!

    ReplyDelete
  85. It's lovely to see your version of events! The only ''highlights'' ( if that's the right word) I managed to see on telly were Kenny Rogers and Bruce Forsythe. It didn't have me wishing I was there funnily enough. xxx

  86. Its a secret dream of mine to one day attend Glastonbury with Gwensday & meet up with you & Jon! I know her mind would be blown & in her element! Do take care of your hip, we don't want a limping Vix (though I'm sure you'd still be just as glamourous!) XXX

  91. Oh I love this post! you look amazing for not showering too! I would look bloody awful!

I'm not keen on mumford either-who wants to listen to that old twoddle when you could be exploring an insect circus? Not me! it looks so much fun. I've never been to Glasto but I would like to experience it, as I live in Bristol I should make the effort as it's not far from me at all!

    much love xxxxxxxxx
