Bollywood Mash Up

It's Wednesday morning, I'm just off to the corner shop in vintage denim and gold lamé.

I do love a good mash-up, stuff that really shouldn't go together but somehow work brilliantly, like curry sauce and chips, fizzy white wine with Flying Saucers or Bollywood Carmen - Bhangra meets Bizet performed on the streets of Bradford and broadcast live by the Beeb - it had me whirling round the lounge last night like a woman demented.

When the curtains opened to reveal drab & drizzly skies this morning I knew I needed to don my latest maxi dress and unleash a bit of Bollywood dazzle.

How cool is the label?

Gold and silver together - gotta be done.

Indian, Pakistani, African, Native American ....

Why just feck around with just one cultural reference when you can pile on the entire bastard lot ?

The Rolling Stones, vintage handicrafts, contemporary footwear.....

Sharing my feet over at Bella's

Clothes are mere frivolities, dress up, wear what you love and stop mithering about what other people think of you. If they don't like you because you wear a cocktail dress to buy a lettuce then they probably weren't worth bothering with in the first place.

Here's a fine mash-up, Snoop Dogg might be a dick but this song (and the film it's from) rock.

1970s Perfect Lady cocktail dress (my friend Vicky), Lewis Barnett denim waistcoat (Second to None, Walsall), Pakistani vintage velvet tote (25p, jumble sale), Original Rolling Stones badges & peace earrings (courtesy of Atomic Mildred AKA Clare), turquoise boots (sword-wielding goddess, Helga), Plaited headband (99p dump bin, Boots)

I'm off to get my stock ready for the Canal Festival this weekend and to add a few more frocks to the shop, too. It's probably just as well the weather's crap, no sneaking off to lie in the garden in my bikini.

See you soon!

  3. Sparkles to combat a grey day is an excellent plan of attack, I have used it myself often enough. I agree that other people's opinions aren't important when it comes to matters of style, although I do try to give my son a bit of an opinion about what I wear because I do tend to bring shame upon him with some of my get-ups at school pick-up, poor kid!

  4. A Perfect label I would say!

Love your new dress it is gorgeous. I love your attitude to life I have to say it is something you learn the older you realize that people will like you or not regardless of how you dress.

Hope you have a fab time at your festival this weekend.

  26. So much wisdom in this post! I loved the quote about people that don't worth because they judge you, brilliant! It's true that if they don't like us they don't deserve to be our friends, it's a great way to test them! And I love all the cultural references in your jewelery, amazing way to mix all the things we love! If I could have such a beautiful dress I would wear it everywhere! The boots are perfect too! Have fun at the Canal Festival!
    Love you xxxxxxxxxx

  27. Fab outfit for a grey morning. Your denim waistcoats really do go with everything. The dress is great, and I love the bag and jewellery. As for the boots, they really are a fantastic colour.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the Canal Festival. I reckon that will be a lot of fun.

Off to watch Bollywood Carmen on the iPlayer.

You look great, thanks for cheering me up, love the cultural mash up, it's the way to go! The velvet bag is fantastic but the dress is a stunner, especially with the denim. 30. Oh I love it, the lame is gorgeous. I'd love to make sparkley, shimmery pieces like that look good. But the key is probably in pairing it something like denim and amazing, amazing boots that are swoonable.

  31. You are the United Nations of fashion! And those baubles have me drooling again....

  32. Thanks for the flying saucers link since I had no idea what they were.
Gold, lame and silver do go together and as you so wisely said: if someone doesn't like the way that you dress they are not worth your time or your attention.
I adore how you mix styles, colors and cultures in your life and in your style of dressing.

  35. Love those boots! I applaud you for dressing up to go vegetable shopping; I mostly mooch round to Tesco in something as close to pyjamas as I can find. Apart from that one time I went to Waitrose in just a coat... In my defence, it was an emergency (we'd run out of milk). xx

    ReplyDelete
  36. And yet it doesn't look like a mashup- it looks bloomin super!! I've always enjoyed wearing what I want to, I like being eclectic!x

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes, I'm all for wearing gold lame cocktail dresses to buy a lettuce. Here in your fabulous 'mash up' you have the added joy of spreading bountiful, shimmery delight among all those you pass on your way to the corner shop.

I never comment on your blog (although I read it faithfully) because there are always a million comments already by the time I get to it. This time I thought I should say how fabulous you are! I just listed some maxi skirts and dresses in my Etsy shop, and every time I think of you in your maxi-awesomeness. Just...thanks for being you, that's all!

  39. Gasp, this is one of my favourite maxi dresses of all, glittery, golden madness, makes you look 9 feet tall, and all the cultures thrown into the pot. It's the best way. I'm glad you dress properly for buying lettuce. Love it, Vix.

Here's to silver with gold and a new UN jewelry trend, if they can all play nice on your neck, why not in life!

Thanks for the video, so funny, love it..."more sexy"! Gonna have to say that to Krista next time were trying on clothes!

And, didn't know that Mr.Snoop was a "dick"...must have missed the Daily Mail article. Maybe he's turned over a new ganja leaf, since he's now Snoop Lion.;)

I'm glad I have people like you in my life to remind me of that. I met a friend I've not seen in ages yesterday and she is very like you, just such a positive attitude to life it's good to be around her. I totally missed that Bollywood Carmen so I will have to see if I can track it down, Bollywood is a whole new world waiting to be discovered for me really.
