Getting Hammered

At every vintage fair I hear the same lament, Oh, that's gorgeous but there's no point in me buying it because I don't go anywhere nice enough to wear it. I tell them till I'm blue in the face, you don't need a special occasion, a day without dressing up is a day wasted.

I've been frantically scouring the walls and cupboards round the house to replace the stock we've sold over the weekend. Am I dressed in a skanky pair of jeans to perform such a mundane task? Fat chance, it's vintage all the way.

This 1970s maxi may have been designed by one of Liz Taylor's favourites, Gina Fratini and the V&A may have some of her dresses in their archives but there's no reason not to wear it around the house to hammer in nails and upend drawers. Saving stuff for best is a futile exercise, live for now, who knows what could happen tomorrow?

Despite making some decent sales, the weekend was very quiet. No matter though, for once I had the chance to explore the rails of other sellers, pose for photos, eat Jon's cheese sandwiches uninterrupted and spend some quality time with my vintage family.

This was Sunday's work wear. Last week the lovely Jennie kindly sent a link to the eBay seller who'd listed this 1960s pure silk maxi as "Vintage dress, size 6, stained" with no reference to the Dollyrockers label. A few hours later I'd won it for £2.99 & the "stain" came out with a damp sponge. Isn't she a star? I feel a bit like a Trechnikoff lady in it.

Roland Joyce maxi skirt worn with '70s gypsy top (75p, Salvation Army), tapestry belt (Helga the Great), Frida Kahlo pendant & African trading bead earrings (Handmade by fabulous Tamera), hair flowers (made by me) and an armful of second-hand plastic bangles.
I snapped up this fabulous Roland Joyce skirt on Sunday for £8 and wore it to work yesterday, Frida Kahlo style.

I bought this 1970s cowboy shirt for Jon three years ago from a local chazza. It was the first outing for it yesterday, what took him so long?

These are some of my fellow traders and dear friends, too! Claire (in the 1970s green tea dress) and Maisie (in the 1960s mini) are both wearing Kinky Melon purchases - could I ask for more beautiful models? Gorgeous Sharon (in the aqua polka dots) organising Sunday's vintage fair and it's going to be massive!

I bought the trio of kitsch wooden deer from a jumble sale last year and rediscovered them in the back of a cupboard in the utility room this morning. I've re-jigged my Wall of Random to accommodate them along with the big Vernon Ward swan print I bought for £1 from a car boot sale last Autumn which has languished in the cupboard of doom ever since.

Fratini Designs gauzy maxi dress (£15, yesterday's vintage fair), Lamani coin choker (haggled with a roadside vendor in India)
After two days of work our weekend started last night. It's wine and The Apprentice tonight and pub, beer and curry tomorrow.

Cheers and see you soon!

  2. The dress you are wearing to hammer looks almost exactly like my wedding dress the first time I married!

Love the Freida Kahlo look and you and John look like you are ready to visit Kansas. Does he have a pair of western boots?

  6. Gina Fratini frock for fifteen squid, that's what I call a score. The Dollyrockers frock is a real winner! I just knew those juicy colours would look fabulicious on you. I'm really glad the stain was just a sponge job but I'm sure that had it been worse you would have been able come up with some clever way to disguise it. I love Jon's shirt too, he looks very dapper. I'm prepping for next Saturday's Dandy, customizing cutoffs and denim gilets, hopefully it will all be ready in time.
You look absolutely fabulous in each and every one of these pics and you're right "Saving stuff for best is a futile exercise, live for now, who knows what could happen tomorrow?" bang on :)

  7. There's my beautiful Vix! Looking utterly ethereal in that frock hammering away, those nails should be so lucky! I love your wall of swans and poodles but those dam deer are the cutest!!!

SCORE on that friggin Dolly Rocker dress OMG that print the colors are insatiable you are more fierce than a Trechnikoff lady! Even if the fair was quiet all of you look lovely. Jon what did take you so long that shirt is cowboy fab and not in a broke back mountain kinda way. Your Frida look and new skirt are another delicious outfit, why I just wanna bite you!!!

Enjoy the start to your weekend, better late than never and let's catch up. I miss you!

  8. Pretty, prettier and prettiest - what finds! Tell people to start blogs and snap themselves wearing those clothes and the next think they know they won't be able to resist wearing them out. It definitely gives a boost to your confidence to dress well.

  9. I love the dolly rockers dress, you look like a Hammer Horror heroine from some vague European country, you need a heaving bosom and Ollie Reed and Christopher Lee brooding in the background. Love the floaty dress too, perfect for a bit of interior decorating. The deer are my favourites! They're fantastic. I don't save anything for best but I do save clothes for hot weather that never arrives

  10. I just LOVE your "Wall of Random"!!
You look amazing in your maxi puttering away (I often wear ratty stuff at home because there is usually paint and filth involved in some sort of project)
The dollyrocker maxi is scrumpti-psychodelic-ous!! What a STEAL!!!
And Jon is looking mighty fab in his cowvoy shirt!!

I love your Frida look and that was the first thing that poped in my mind when i saw you??!?!

Have fun on your "weekend" and here's to good karma at the chazza's and sales this week!!

  12. Amazing Dollyrockers dress! Jennie is the kind of enabling friend that we need more of. And your daily wear is absolutely dreamy. You should be the poster child not only for a fashion mag but a hard-hat magazine as well. Living the dream is a daily thing, you are so right! I always enjoy the photos of your friends, especially ones of you and Jon.

  13. Oh my gosh! So many things to love in this post! That dreamy floaty Fratini Designs frock is very Ossie Clark. And Jennie's a star for putting you on to that Dollyrockers maxi.
Is that Jimi I see peeking out from under Jon's waistcoat? You too DO match. You both look fabulous.
Love the red rickrack on that purple skirt and the deer and poodles on your Wall of Random.
Thanks for leaving a link to the post about the skirt you made with the fabric from Jennie. She mentioned that she gave you that fabric as well, but I didn't recall seeing it.

  14. FABULOUS! I's expect nothing less from you to be honest! I have one of my mum's maxis which is pretty much identical to the Frantini number. Just beautiful. I don't save anything for best...life's too short.
Your Frida look is fab and I adore the Dollyrockers frock. Bargain.
Very happy to see that gorgeous mini on such a lovely new owner. Maisie looks a treat in it.

  15. I think I need a "wall of random" in my house, but only if I can have a dress as beautiful as that one to wear when hanging things on it! I can't believe it took Jon all that time to bring out that fab cowboy shirt; he looks so cool, as do you in the dollyrockers maxi (Pink & green together is yummy!) and the Frida-inspired outfit.

  19. So glad I finally have time to read your blog again Vix! I couldn't agree with you more, when I was a child I was always made to wear 'old clothes' around the house and made to save certain things for 'best' its just ridiculous. Why wear thing that make you feel frumpy? I love the shots of your house, such a pretty white frock!

  20. Fabulous, fabulous Vix, on all fronts. You look wonderful, so does your home. I am intrigued by the diploma on your wall, couldn't quite see what it represented, would love to know!
Glad that the weekend sales were good for you, you are such a busy girl, hope you get some playtime now.
    Love from Pam in TX.xx

  21. Fark YES, I couldn't agree with you more about the waste of a day not frocked up to the nines! That frock is rather sublime, and I am all a titter with desire over each and every frock in this post! OMG! You are seriously rocking that divoon hairdo; it gives a slight asiatic twist to that scrumptious silk Dolly Rocker (SCORE!) frock, and then a Native American kind of vibe to the Frida-esque outfit!!
Jon is giving me the HORN in his smooth threads. The cowboy shirt better get some regular airing, baby!!!
The wall of random totally RPCKS my world!!! I've been thinking that we must be safe to get some shit up on the wall...but we just had another quake, so that is slightly offputting. Feck it!
I had THE most extensive dream of being at yours last night, it was brillant!

  22. It all sounds so much fun, fairs, vintage and friends. I nearly bough a similar maxi to your first one (not with the same sleeves though). But decided against it it because I thought the colour would wash me out. You my love look divine as always.

Jon and cheese sandwiches huh, was he a time pinch or he just looks cheese sandwiches. Have you tried tomato, marmite and cheese yet? You must tell me your verdict.

Lovely rearranged wall and those dear a just lovely.

...and I agree: "You don't need a special occasion--a day without dressing up is a day wasted". Though I have a different style from you, some people remark when they see me that I'm "dressed up". It's just my way.

I love all of your outfits. That dollyrockers dress is exquisite and your sexy senorita look is heavenly.

HA! Jon wore the shirt!! You said it was only a matter of time. I've got faith Q will do that safari jacket in the end now!

Love all your Vernon Ward swans and of course Enchanted Glade. That's my fave of his. xxxxxx

  35. How come all I find on Ebay is stuff to laugh at? I must be doing it wrong! Good skills Jennie, that dress is perfect on you and how pleasant to find a 'stain' which turns out to be less than mentioned, rather than the unmentioned mark which so often makes an appearance on ebay buys.

  37. WOW! So much fabulousness, Vix, that I'm gob smacked (as you Brits say)! The angel sleeves, the "Rechnikoff lady" dress for a song and you know how I LOVE vintage peasant anything! The wall looks amazing and so does Jon in his cowboy shirt. You guys are just way beyond cool! I keep saying you need your own televisions show! ;)

Funny how you mentioned going through your stuff to replenish your vintage stock; I do the same. No need to buy more vintage to sell when there's good stuff sitting around the house, right?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ahhhh such a multitude of fabulous outfits, each one totally gorgeous on you beautiful Vix! I adore that first floaty number on you, the perfect garb for hanging pictures - I'm totally with you on wearing beautiful frocks around the house (or anywhere) for no reason but just for the pleasure of it. And how clever was Jennie to send you that link - the 2nd frock fits you like a glove, looks so very sexy, and what an amazing bargain it was!

  41. Your ultra-feminine vintage Gina Fratini floral layered chiffon gown is spectacularly beautiful. You might be the only person I've seen a photo of using a hammer while wearing such a pretty frock. The hairbow and the colourful outfit you were wearing by the rails was pretty as is the vintage Dollyrockers dress you picked up. What a bargain!

I also love Jon's style, I must confess that I bought a cowboy shirt for me, I always dreamed to have one and sometimes I love to be a tomboy!
