Home Alone & Hidden Treasures

After the temperature hit the heady heights of 15C , maybe a tad optimistically, I packed away my winter clothes. Call me easily pleased but it really is exciting to get the summer suitcases down from the top of the wardrobe and get reacquainted with treasures long-forgotten after a harsh and seemingly endless winter.

Darling Desiree sent me this a-mazing 1960s silk culotte suit ages ago but last summer was so crap that it hadn't had a single outing since 2011 so on it went. I soon warmed up after a brisk stroll into town to stock up on fruit and veg from off the market. I'm back just in time 'cos it's hailing now!

Silk culotte suit worn with leopard platform boots (like Hollie's), bastard massive 1960s copper pendant (50p, car boot sale), 1970s Ted Lapidus sunglasses (£1.95, Acorns Hospice, 2009)  and a vintage Hong Kong-made straw bucket bag (£1, car boot sale last September)
Jon's working away so it's the perfect excuse to buy and eat food he hates. I'm not sure what's on the menu but avocado, papaya & sweet potato feature strongly!

Here's another forgotten treasure - a super-loud 1960s three piece pants suit by Butterfield 8 I bought following a drunken lunchtime session with the girls in Wetherspoons last summer.

When I was a little girl adulthood meant being just like my Mum, swanning around the house in killer heels, floaty psychedelia, jangly jewellery with a bottle of wine on the go. I'm officially a grown-up!

Butterfield 8 suit (Second To None, Walsall) worn with perspex stripper heels (£1 charity stall, Why Not Festival, 2012), Indian pendant (Hand-made by the fabulous Edie Pop)

Anyway, you lot - stop perving over the bath towel on my washing line! I found it in Mum and Dad's airing cupboard when I was clearing the house, it was a wedding present in 1966 but Mum thought it was too nice to use - that's one trait I didn't inherit!

Have a fabulous weekend!

I love that you are planning to eat what Jon hates, it sounds sweet, I'll never get why men don't like avocados! One of my favourite combination is yellow and pink, these colours are also my daughters favourites and the print of Desiree's dress is lovely! Those Ted Lapidus sunglasses immediately caught my eyes, so beautiful, what a great bargain!!The funky three piece suit is mind blowing and I love how you pimped it with the silver accessories!!!!

  13. I love avocados!! I even eat them plain with just salt and pepper yum yum yum. The pantsuit is killer!!! Edie's pendant is freakin' amazing and I love those shoes that you and Hollie both have... Shoes are my retail weakness because big feet means NEVER getting the cool vintage/second-hand shoes :(

  19. I'm still trying to loose that 'too good for everyday/save it for a special occasion' mantra that my mum had! "Wear it today, for tomorrow I may not be here", sorta thing is what I need to live by!
Love the Butterfield 8, (sounds like a gang that should have Liberty working towards their release from prison!), and the stripper shoes. Mind you, in those heels all I'd be able to do would be to lounge on a sofa!!!

Here is an idea for your avocado: diced the avocado add some diced tomatoes, some white or red onions, 1 spoon of apple cider vinager,1 spoon of olive oil, a dash of dry cilantro, a bit of salt, a bit of pepper and a bit of your favorite hot sauce. Mix it all and have it with some warm bread.
    Its so good!

  35. Ha ha, I considered commenting on that towel! My mum used to have an aaaaamazing 60's floral towel cape which I am curious as to where it is! I'm sure we never actively got rid of it! I ADORE your cullotte suit- very very flattering and pretty!x

    ReplyDelete
  36. Stunning as ever!
I do exactly the same when Himself is away and eat all the things he hates, watch things he hates and always put fresh bedding on the bed so I can luxuriate in all the blissful bed space.

  37. Oh it's a bath towel! Lovely, perfect for daily use!
Not one but TWO gorgeous outfits for us, mmmm. The culottes suit from Desiree is stunning, such fabulous colours. Look, Stephen Squirrel wants to be in the photos too, in his oh-so-fashionable black and white. And the Butterfield 8 could have been worn by Liz Taylor, don't you think? So ridiculously glamorous and gorgeous with those mad stripper heels and your up do.
Now - drink wine, eat avocado, do your darling mum proud, and enjoy your solo evening! xxxxx

  39. I haven't dressed for my inspiration walk yet, so I'm glad I stopped by here first! I loved the culotte suit for its colour but then you mentioned that it's silk. Stunning. It must feel silky swishy on your body. And your lounge wear? Amazing! My mum never wore things like this, ever, so clearly I have much catching up to do. You must star in a movie wearing this.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh the bond we share! I've been waiting for you to bust out those shoes so I can say, "OMG me and Vix have the same shoes! Here's proof!" HAHAHA!! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow, your mum sounds cool! And so does a few days of cooking fun food and eating lots of garlic with nobody to complain about it (men - can't live without them, can't live with them ALL the time).

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sweet potato! Yup that's something I only get to eat when the other half's away!

    Loving the coullote suit!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Looking so beautiful!!! Have a wonderful weekend! XXX

    ReplyDelete
  45. SWEET catsuit (or jumpsuit as we Americans call them.) I had a dress as a child in the late 60s in those colors and always get a great feeling when I see a vintage garment with dreamy pink and yellow.

Now get OUT, you, with your loud outfit and stripper heels! Holy cow! You've got you va-va-voom on today! Like I said, Donna Reed you'll never be.

I can so envision women such as your mom "floating" around the house back in their day. I, too, aspire to float... and jingle-jangle when I come into a room. You know, kind of like when the wind blows through wind chimes. Sounds like your mom had that down. Now you can carry on the tradition. ;)

Have a lovely, restful weekend, my dear.

  46. The Vintage Queen sitting on the throne. LOL Lovely outfits as always! You even make the stripper platforms look classy, oh my!

  47. I put all my winter clothes away today too, hope I'm not being too optimistic as well! Have a great weekend Vix xxx

    ReplyDelete
  48. Both these are amazing. Love the warm summer colours of the culotte suit but that three piece number is something else!! Wow! Perfect for lounging round the house and stuffing your face with food and wine you don't have to share! Looks like Stephen wants to be in on the blog action today! xxxxx

  49. Made me smile about the food! I do the exact same thing. Its usually Cous Cous and root veg here! ;)

  50. Well, it's simply the most beautiful bath towel I have ever seen.
You certainly look the epitome of summer in that culotte outfit. I do hope your bringing the summer wardrobe out bodes well for the weather when I arrive in the UK next week.
And you look the epitome of grown-up in the Butterfield 8 suit. After seeing the pics of your mum on FB, I can see how you've inherited the glamour gene from her.

  54. That towel is definitely worth a perve...it looks like a Sanderson print, I have a mug in a very similar print which I adore! What a lovely gift and it's great that you're using it and reminded of your mum and dad whilst doing so!

That suit is absolutely amazing...it makes me feel happy just looking at you! I am also inclined to totter about the house in high heels feeling like a lady! haha :)

    Much love xxxxxx

  56. O, indeed, QUITE the grown up!!! My Mama didn't swan about the house in heels with a bottle of wine on the go, but her friend Lois' neighbour did, and that exactly who I thought of when you made this description! She had fire red henna too, no wonder I ended up with a similar colour!
You look like a dream come true in both of these glorious outfits! Fecking SQUEE SQUEE SQUEE!
I simply must go put on bigger heels than I have on, and get myself a cocktail now! Be there in 5 for snacks!

One of the great things about dressing in vintage is that you don't have to chuck out clothes once they are no longer this month's fashion. You can bring them out each spring and wear them as long as you like without worrying about the fashion police banging you up!

Look at you in that silk culotte suit, can't fault it, those are the colours of summer with that little basket and the shape and fit of it are poifict in every way. I know I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but I love it!!

I also very much admire the pics of you LOUNGING around the house in that casual, drop-dead glamorous way. What, darlings? This old thing? Adulthood to me was long hair which your mum didn't insist on hacking off and high heels. You've nailed it.

Hope Jon wasn't too traumatised after a Friday night out East. I like the sound of your vege shopping and can testify to the briskness of your walking! xxxxx

You look smashing as a 70's(60's)housewife.
My mom has always been a double knit/elastic waist gal sans makeup and always a perm in her little curly hair :)
I don't have the verve to don such lovelies when I'm on down time. Maybe I should! A daily celebration :)
