Never Say Never

Knitwear? Leggings as trousers? What's going on? Anyone who knows me will tell you that I don't usually "do" either but it's good to push those boundaries occasionally.

Besides I hadn't worn my thigh boots for ages and these '80s crushed velvet leggings I found at Saturday morning's jumble sale seemed like the perfect accompaniment (and too snazzy to hide under a maxi dress).

I usually say that I don't "do" illness, too, but I'm struggling with a hacking cough and what threatens to be a chest infection. It's the first time I've had anything up with me for almost half a decade and I can't bear it, I'm a crap nurse and an even worse patient and will struggle on in denial until I get better or end up bed-bound.

A sensible woman would give in and go to the doctor's. An idiot like me continues to get up at 7am for a workout and subjects herself to a morning of charity shopping with the great unwashed of the Black Country. I'll never learn (but at least we'll never go short of clothes!)

What I found:
Charles Guy pinstripe wool jersey blazer with elbow patches (£1), Madeira souvenir rucksack - ready for Glasto (£2, Age UK), Kati at Laura Phillips funky 1970s bolero (£1), Two up-cycled shoppers made from Thai rice sacks (£1 each), Retro denim waistcoat with leather suspender back detail (£1) - All except the rucksack came from Cancer Research UK.

Made by Aurora Della Moda of Sorrento, Italy.
I took receipt of a fabulous parcel of joy yesterday afternoon from the lovely Jen, complete with the 1950s silk blouse I'm wearing. Jen used to blog HERE until real life got in the way.

A creepy-but-cute Blythe Doll card.

And a gorgeous paisley print strapless sun top which will go into my India case as soon as Stephen Squirrel shifts his arse.

Peacock blouse worn with hand crochet coat (made by Mum from unravelled jumble sale  jumpers in the 1970s), 1980s English-made crushed velvet leggings (20p, Saturday's scout jumble sale), Lamani gypsy coin belt (bought from a market in Mysore, worn as a pendant) and thigh boots (£3, car boot sale), headband - part of a Babyliss multi-pack (50p, Boots' clearance bin)
So it's an occasional "yes" to leggings as trousers (as long as they're not wearing thin and almost transparent) but there are plenty of things that I won't ever wear; fleece, beige, pointy shoes, 1980s power suits or demure Princess Di dresses, big pouffy 1950s frocks, real fur, sportswear, anything with a brand plastered across it....how about you? What do you consider one sartorial step too far?

See you soon.

I'm linking to the Ethical Fashion Bloggers monthly round-up, the theme's knitwear and although it's crochet it's the only woolly thing I own!

  1. I love those bags from rice sacks, they a great. You look fab, and the boots are particularly excellent. I'm with you on the leggings as trousers thing, also harem pants, tracksuits, baseball caps... They're all things I wouldn't touch. Xx

  2. Love your coat soooooo much.
    Get better my sweet, Vix.

  3. Your crocheted coat is fantastic. Me and Sue found a crocheted cape with a hood last week that she nearly bought, you would have loved it. I don't do mutton dressed as lamb, tracksuits, well I just don't do anything that isn't comfortable!!

  4. I used to wear such crushed velvet pants´s back in the 80´s ! Made them myself . At the store Lindex in Sweden they had such pants for sale right now!
I think you lok fab as always !

  5. Leggings as trouser is a big no-no here - they are great as an alternative to tights though.

I'd never were trainers except to the gym and I'd sooner die than wear a baseball cap or a beige wolf fleece ;)

  6. Love those leggings :)

And nice charity shop haul - particularly like the purple bolero... and scarf.

Hope you get better soon xxx

  7. Fabulous outfit! Joseph and his coat of many many colours! Be kind to yourself and watch that chest - it can turn pretty quickly x

  8. I'd never wear a mini, (my legs are too fat) a shell suit, a baseball cap or any logo'ed t-shirt.
At the airport last week I saw a woman in lacy footless tights, she was wearing them as leggings! You could quite clearly see her arse through them (she did have a great body, but still!) as she only wore a tiny thong underneath. All the men's tongues were hanging out.

  9. That hand crochet coat by your mum is stupendous!! You look fantastic in this outfit, and the crushed velvet leggings look great, especially with those boots. I love pointy shoes, but I'm not a fan of fleece, goretex, brand names written across apparel, and nylon jackets. Also I won't wear Birkenstocks. If you lived here you'd know why I have an aversion to most of the things on this list.

  10. Wow wow wow, those shoes are to-die-for! And that bambi toy, so adorable :)

  11. You totally rock leggings. I love that blouse too! :-)

  13. Feel better soon, take it easy x

  14. I love this outfit, it's good to try something different every once in a while. I don't 'do' jeans but would never say never as I did used to wear skinny ones a lot when I was at college. I would not be seen dead in a tracksuit, fleece, ugg boots (oh how the girls love an ugg boot where I live) and trainers! There are probably other things as well but I can't think of them right now x

  15. Loooooove your crochet coat. No leggings for me - not on my large jacksey!! - and no real fur or tracksuits. And I can't cope with high heels these days either. Hope you're soon feeling much better (I never darken the door of the Dr's either, if I can help it.)

    ReplyDelete
  16. They are some pretty hot leggings and I'm more than a little partial to that wooly goodness.

I saw your sweet kitty and had a moment. Your kitty reminds me of my sweet boy he looked very similar. Oh how I miss my Howrd.

  17. GO TO THE DOCTOR! If I can do it you can do it, sometimes you just have to admit defeat and get some meds especially if you do have a chest infection.

For me real fur is an absolute fashion/lifestyle choice no no. I don't do tracksuits, pastel shades or pointy shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  18. These look fine as trousers - as you say it's those cheapo thin leggings which should never be worn as trousers - the ones which are so thin you can see the label attached to the inside of the back waistband!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh I hope your feeling better soon! Your outfit is as always amazing, especially those kinky boots wow!

I keep changing my mind on things I wont wear, for years I refused to wear a dress and now, well I can't stop. There are a few things I can guarantee Ill never be caught dead in though, real fur, ugg boots, stonewashed double denim and toweling track suits, especially the ones that have things like 'juicy' written across the arse!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well, those velvets are really in a category all by themselves. Don't really count as leggings in my opinion.

Just think what you'd have missed if you had been a "sensible woman"?!?

But please take care of yourself. Apparently the "crud" has crossed the ocean! Seems like so many people around here have it - brochitis, etc. Thankfully, it hasn't hit us yet. (But as you say, "never say never....)

  21. It might contain items not generally associated with your inimitable style, yet this outfit is still very you, Vix!
Fabulous 70s style in the shape of the amazing crochet coat, with the personal history of being made by your fabulous mum? Check.
Velvet goth/rock chick leggings, and made in England, to show off your killer pins? Check.
    Sky high heels? Check.
Gloriously pretty top with a beautiful peacock print, gifted from one of your many blog buddies? Check.
    Headband, jewellery, attitude? Check!
Great chazza haul. Look after yourself, it's so unlike you to be ill.
NO to fleece, baseball caps, Uggs, logos, sportswear, pretty similar to many comments above. Your followers are a stylish lot, like your darling self! xxxxxxxxx

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hope you'll feeling better soon, dear Vix! Knitwear and leggings? Definitely a 'DO' for you! Love the colours of the cardi!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Glad the peacock blouse is getting some wear - looks fab! Jen xx

    ReplyDelete
  24. thankyou soooo much for the lovely comments you left me Vix! I adore this outfit, you still manage to look so "you" despite wearing things you wouldn't normally choose!

I'm pretty liberal when it comes to fashion but I wouldn't wear crocs. I just couldn't. And I don't wear much print or bright colours, but I am working on this!

    Much love Amie xxxxxxxxx

    ReplyDelete
  25. Never say never indeed especially as you look so great. I'd never wear gym wear unless I was exercising. Nightwear and I'm talking pajamas worn out and about. Its an odd fashion here where I live and I just don't get it. Are they fresh on or have they not bothered changing from bed? either way, they have usually made an effort with their hair, make up.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Take it easy, you don't want to end up collapsing on the treadmill or whatever it is you get up to at the crack of dawn. I shall be making some rosehip syrup soon - that's good for staving off illness, loads of vitamin C. I imagine your mum's amazing crochet coat will help keep the chill off your chest too.

I refuse to wear crocs outside the back garden. have a bit of a phobia of loafers and hate those padded waistcoat things you see sloaney girls wearing. In fact most Chelsea type things - I used to wear a wax jacket to muck out my pony, not with pearl earrings and highlights!

  27. You are the bravest and the most beautiful ill woman that I've ever seen!I've got a crush on this crushed velvet leggings outfit! The coat your mom made is amazing and perfect for this stunning modern hippy look (I don't use the 'boho' word, because it sound like an insult to me, boho is for 'Made in China' fans)! I use to have similar pants back in the 90's and I often think about them because I've continued to worn them since my last house moving and I'm afraid they get lost!Your finds are all fabulous!I hope you'll get better soon!
    Love

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love the bolero you found, it would look great with leggings and boots, actually! And I don't think you're breaking the "leggings as trousers" rule when they're velour and you're wearing a long cardi over them - if you can't tell what underwear you're wearing I think it can be okay (the girl I saw on the Tube the other day on the other hand? I could tell she was wearing pink leopard frenchies through her black leggings. GO AND FIND A SKIRT, DEAR.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Leggings, no, taking care of yourself, YES! Hoping you are better already. What I wouldn't wear? A smile when I didn't feel like it!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Very nice to see Stephen and very NOT nice to hear you're sick. Phooey! Love your generous and colourful cardigan and worn with leggings as pants would make a great cozy outfit to help make you feel better. Certainly makes you look better!

  31. Looking great as ever despite the lurgy ... hope you're feeling tip top very soon! No, no's for me are branded tees, fleece, in betweeny calf length skirts (I'm too short) and the awful trend for jeggings/leggings as trousers. Exposed bottoms in leggings with knicker lines ... why, oh why!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Vix you look fab and sorry to hear that you are feeling unwell. Hope you feel better soon.

  33. Love the peacock so much! You look glorious. I won't wear real fur, I prefer it on the creature. And I look dead in mustard and yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  34. What a beautiful and daring outfit! You have a great figure for leggings. I will only wear them if my bum is covered! I wouldn't be seen dead in a tracksuit or anything eighties. It's just wrong. I have to be careful with heels as I'm tall and can look like a man in drag...and I cannot bear man made fibres! Give me wool any day!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That crochet coat is gorgeous, your mum was a clever and stylish lady.
    And those leggings, LUSH!
    xx

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well my dear, you're the best looking ill person I've seen! Leggings done properly, I think! Like you, I don't go to the doctor if I can help it, but I'd brave a trip to the surgery if you think it may turn nasty. Hopefully the knitwear will chase the lurgy away. My style no-nos? Real fur, track suits, ugg(ly) boots, sportswear outside the gym. Sadly it's a popular look here - the women clearly spend a fortune on hair and nails but just don't bother about clothes. Who was it said 'it costs a fortune to look this cheap?'.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh Vix, get better soon! Have you tried ginger tea (my default recipe). 'I'll never learn but at least we'll never go short of clothes!' could definitely be my mantra, too - and 'there are no sartorial limits that can't be pushed'. Looking glorious! xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  38. How is it possible that you still look amazing while sick???

    ReplyDelete
  39. Gah to lurgy - but don't mess with a nasty cough Vix - I ended up with pneumonia once trying to 'la-la-la-I-hate-going-to-the-doctor' nasty stuff and flu vaccine every year since :(

    I like leggings.
Des Pull Your Socks up is my leggingista role model.

I wouldn't wear real fur or anything currently retail without some form of customisation or dyeing the crap out of it. Denim makes me feel ordinary. Jeggings - just the word makes me feel all stabby. Each to their own on underwear-revealing et al - if it makes you feel fab - do it - but please, no side eye at me for not wanting to do the same.

You look awesome as ever Vix xx

    ReplyDelete
  40. Firstly, evidence of your beloved late-mother's coolness completely takes my breath away. Again! She must have really enjoyed making that beautiful patchwork crochet number, picking up bits of wool until she ran out and started on a new colour:). What a kind friend Jen is to stay in touch and the Italian silk blouse is such an amazing find - peacocks and you are made for each other. Gorgeous! Bloody gorgeous!!!! I must say that apart from fur, which I do wear, you've ticked all the boxes for items of clothing I will NOT consider wearing. My pet hate is anything with a sports or clothing brand slogan emblazoned on it. They should be paying US to wear that shit!!! xoxoxoxox

    ReplyDelete
  41. I literally adore that crochet coat, it must be like walking around in a snuggly blanket!!

You look amazing, leggings and boots is a great look for you with the Vix twist you've put on it!

if you ever want to sell that blouse please email first! i adore it.

hmmm, things i wouldn't wear? prob a lot of the things that you wear so well! but that's what makes this crazy world go round, no? xo

  43. cropped beige pants! The worse thing ever "designed"!

I wear cotton leggings under dresses/skirts in the summer....I hate having sweaty thighs. You're a slender woman and can wear leggings as pants, not me!

Logo covered anything, I'm not a billboard. I will wear the T-shirt promoting our shows for the theatre(but only on opening nights)

Sweatshrits,Strapless top, and really short skirts.....back I look bad in them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh Vix I LOVE this look. It's just perfect for you. You of all people have the perfect figure to get away with leggings as trousers and that oversize crochet cardi is just fabulous beyond words! I'm with you on all your fashion no-no's and I tend to only wear leggings as tights. The blazer with elbow patches is amazing. Is it for Jon or for selling at your vintage fair?

I'm sorry to hear that it looks like after all these years you are finally catching cold, I hope it comes and goes quickly I know you do not do sick. Let Jon take care of you will ya:) I can't believe you look this good fighting a cold.

  50. Vix, for being under the weather, your outfit is over the top and I mean that in a good way! :)

Wearing leggings as pants is popular here in the States. I wear them, but not often. They look really good on you. You're looking very rock n' roll!

The crocheted coat is a masterpiece! Was so touched to hear that it was made by your mother. She must have been a very talented lady. I do have several knitted or crocheted, fringed ponchos and vintage shawls, but otherwise I'm not big on knits either.

I hear what you say about not getting sick often. I'm usually just like you when I do. If anything, please drink lots of water and hot tea and try to get some extra sleep, my dear. Hot baths help too. Remember, water, rest and warmth are some of nature's best remedies. Sending positive vibes your way. Take care.

  53. I love those velvet leggings, I think wearing leggings as trousers is a thin line to tread but as long as your anatomy isn't visible then I'm all for it!
Your charity shop finds are pretty cool, nothing is ever that cheap in the charity shops near me, the blazer alone would set you back £15 in most our shops!

  54. I don't do frills or flounces, cardigans or pleats! It's very rare that I carry a handbag - can't see the point of humping a load of things about, nor do I do belts unless they are absolutely necessary to hold up trousers. Now should I consider crocheting a coat?
    Love from Mum

  55. Love that crochet coat. hope your better soon, Other half has it too and is very poorly.
I draw the line at trainers and jeans, seperately or together, actually l I do have some trainers for antiquing but they're Clarks originals so quite subtle by today's standards, more like shoes really cough, cough!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love the crochet coat, especially since your Mama made it! I spend a lot of time shouting "Leggings are not pants" in my head when walking around on campus where I work, so I hesitate to applaud you here, but as another commenter pointed out, we can't see your knickers or your anatomy, so you're off the hook. You and Desiree seem to be able to wear them with aplomb. Great Chazza finds, especially the denim vest with the suspender detail - I bet Jon would rock that.

I won't wear sweats, uggs, logos, crocs, suits (maybe if it was Armani?) or crop tops.

You have to wear legging with boots like that, don't you? How else would you really show them off to their best advantage?! Your mom's coat of many colors is fantastic. lucky you to have it! Take care and don't wait too long to see a doctor if needed.

  66. I love those leggings Vix and even though they're not something you'd usually wear, you still look very you in them. That knitted Kaftan is amazing too, a long way from a cosy traditional knit. I love all the bags you found but I am a real bag lady, I have far too many and bought another one in the charity shop yesterday. Things I wouldn't wear would be skyscraper heels, even though I love the look of them, I'm too tall and I wouldn't be able to walk in them. Anything too formal unless it was mixed with a bit of scruff. I just look old and dowdy if I'm too smartly dressed. xx

  72. You know what the best thing for a cough or cold is? CURRY!! Go have loads and make sure it's quite hot. Hot baths, honey and lemon, obviously booze of the port, whiskey, mead variety. Also you could juice up a bunch of citrus fruit and add ice and drink it nice and cold.
You look great in those leggings! I want to see you in more spectacular trousers, especially with things like that wonderful coat you're wearing. Your mum was very good at crochet!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm glad you know when to say 'never' and not to. That coat-of-many-colors is well worth the exception. Given the weather in the U.K. I'd live in it!
And, always say 'yes' to peacocks.
So sorry that you're not well. Do take care of yourself. Try steam inhalation over a bowl of steaming water with a drop or two of eucalyptus oil.
I say 'never' to baseball caps (very popular where I live) and high heels (or any shoe in which I can't walk 6 miles and run for a bus). I also hate those cropped trousers that end a few inches above the ankle and seem to be mandatory for middle-aged ladies here.
