Buy, Buy Baby - Last Week in Purchases

I'm too distracted for a proper outfit post today so feast your eyes on last Thursday's antics instead.

The 82-year old lady who runs the church jumble sale was short of volunteers this month so rather than joining the scrum at the door we volunteered our help instead (and it would have been rude not to make a few purchases whilst we were at it).

The calm before the madness.

This is what your average jumble looks like before it opens the doors to the general public.

Here's what we found:

Sylvac planter, two swans and a Hornsea preserve pot.

From the 1950s - lace stilettos, Silhouette boned corset, three Swiss-made skinny ties and a boxed Pifco trouser press.

From the 1960s - Cashmilion lace top, Made in Mayfair Crimplene waistcoat, Acrylic jumper, St Michael Crimplene pants and Dolcis low heeled pumps.

A ridiculously kitsch clock, 1930s brocade platforms, squirrel and rabbit fabric, Hong Kong-made retro tea cosy.

For the boys: Aquascutum 1960s Scottish Tweed lounge suit, 1960s braided dinner suit, 1971 issue of Playboy

A rainbow of shoe trees, fake fur mittens, neon jelly gladiators and a 1970s birdcage umbrella

Don't worry, I'm not keeping most of it, I don't think my already bursting wardrobe could cope! It'll be making it's way to my next vintage fair on 13th October.

Linking with Lakota's Ta-Dah Tuesday!

1960s Barry Artist lurex angel sleeve top (£7, Second To None), suede mini skirt (Courtesy of Liz), ultraviolet opaques (Xmas present last year), Original leopard platforms(£6.19, eBay)
I'm packing away my more summery clothes and getting the lurex, dresses with sleeves and fake fur coats out of storage in readiness for the inevitably l-o-n-g, cold Winter. I'm finding all sorts of gems I'd forgotten, I may be some time!

See you soon.

  1. I used to have that very same suede mini, don't know what happened to it. A good haul resulting from your altruism - am very amused that someone thought a vintage Playboy was a suitable church jumble offering but I guess it was as you snapped it up! Anyone famous inside?

Did you get any pics once it had opened or were you concentrating on not being crushed in the stampede?

  2. Hmm, that jumble sale doesn't look that enticing. Who'd a thunk it would yield so many goodies for your vintage stall.
Great idea to be a volunteer. I did that for a community clothing swap years ago and am still wearing the items I scored before anyone else saw them.
You look lovely in plum -- my favorite color. I almost equate cooler weather with that color. It seemed to be the back to school color in the fashion magazines I read as a teen in the 70s.
Can't wait to see your hidden gems.

  3. Seems you are feeling the chill after all! Fantastic bargains from the JS and I bet the old lady was pleased to have your assistance. Those lace stilleto's take me back, my mum had a black pair and the clock is hilariously ghastly. No doubt the 70's edition of Playboy seems tame by todays porn standards. xxxxxxxxx

  4. Oh my hearts fluttering at all that amazing stash! Is that the armoire you cleared out for our stay? Holy sweet Jesus it's bursting with color and all kinds I've stuff I want to play in!

My favorite scores have to be you new umbrella, those pink jellies and that crazy ass clock. Thanks for sharing what a jumble sale looks like- next I want to see the biddie old ladies going crazy.

You look extra sexy standing amongst all that glamour and those shoes, meow mama!

  7. Good heavens, what a pile of fabulous finds! I'll take that kitschy clock and the brocade 30's shoes please ;) I'm starting to get some of my fall things out and layering has become the order of the day. Love the burgundy mini with the flashy fuschia tights.

  8. My Mam has something very similar to the white planter. You did well from the jumble sale and how nice to help out.

  9. The words treasure trove and cornucopia come to find!! A feast for those of us who thrive on the hunt!!! It resembles the very first rummage sale I went to at the tender age of about 11. It was set up in a similar fashion, but larger and most things were collected in large boxes. It was a turning point in my life and I've never forgotten it. I scored a pair of perfectly broken in and faded madras plaid patchwork shorts and a handmade sweater with a fair aisle pattern around the yoke. I was hooked for life.

Love your finds and you look smashing!!

  13. Oh Vix this post is full of exciting things! You know I am salivating over those shoe horns don't you? Vintage shoe horns fascinate me because I'm a weirdo! I love seeing your A/W clothes come out. It's always fun to see you do cold weather Vix style, and lots of inspiration too. You must have done so well in your vintage fairs. Your whole house is full of amazing potential stock.

Great to catch up with you again. I've been so behind in my commenting in the last few weeks I feel so out of the loop. So so busy and very tired:(

  18. I love the Hornsea pot your picked up. Being from East Yorkshire and not too far a drive from Hornsea I grew up with a lot of Hornsea pottery around me - in fact my parents best plate set and their tea/coffee/sugar jars all are Hornsea. I love their bold vivid colour uses - certainly eye catching!

  19. I love your leopard platforms, I'm more on Cinderella's step sisters side: huge and wide feet, it's not easy to find the right shoes even on e-bay, few weeks ago I left my heart on some 70's red boots, but they only could fit my nose!
Great finds, my favourite are the swans clock and the swan vase, the fur mittens, the pink jelly shoes and the playboy magazine, I'm sure that the pictures in it are very beautiful, everything back then was more natural!
    Love xxxx

I *oohh'ed and Ahhh'ed* over your finds. I am in love with that bird cage umbrella. They are SO AWESOME!

  29. Ooh, Barry Artist gets another outing, I LOVE that top! You look so fabulous in your suede mini and those leopard print boots are a joy!
Your jumble looks very orderly - at least before the Black Country grannies got their mitts on the loot! You find so many interesting things. Love those brocade sandals and the lacy stilletos, and I am rather taken with the kitsch-tactic clock too. And I am smiling at your fabulous arrangement of shoe trees!
Well done for helping out, I bet the lady who organises the jumble was really grateful to you. xxxxxxx

  49. So cute that you took the pictures in your closet! That jumble sale looked great ... What a beautiful old room it was held in. We don't have such sales here (or if we do, I don't know about them). Looks like fun for sure and you got some terrific things. I love the preserve jar.

  50. I am insanely jealous of your jumble sale attendance. Ours are mostly full of crap or overpriced vintage.

The outfit in the first pic is my idea of colour/pattern combo heaven.

  51. Love those 30's shoes. Crazy use of trim. Sometime soon I'll be doing the yearly closet clean out. We'll see how must I really give to the local charity shop.

  55. I've often wondered if I should volunteer at an op-shop, although part of that is so I can pick the best goodies for myself ;)

You guys came away with a pretty fabulous haul - I'm sure your next stall will be amazing as well.

I love your wardrobe, I can't wait till we have a place of our own (instead of renting) so we call full it with cute furniture:)

  56. It's ages since I've been to a jumble sale so your pics are making me pine for one Vix. Love your leopard print platforms in the first photo, plus seeing some of the contents of your wardrobe is very tantalising. I like the swan ornaments and the clock the best I think, and finding the Playboy is funny at a church jumble sale of all places. xx

  57. Excellent haul!!! Volunteering to help out at a jumble sale or charity shop might be a fun thing to do. I actually considered helping out at one of our local shops, but I want to donate all my excess stuff to it first, before I go in.

Dn't want to be there when they start slagging off my jumpers!

    Loooooove the shoe trees!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Stupendous haul you got there, Vix. I'm loving the Sylvac planter - I've got a couple of Sylvac pots just like that adorning my mantelpiece. Those rainbow hued shoe trees are lovely too.

I helped set up a jumble sale - many moons ago - and I remember it being incredibly hard work. Good on you and Jon for volunteering.

  59. Ta Da indeed! What finds! Loving those shoe trees and I don't even have use for them, just a treat for the eyes, as are you in your suede mini.

  61. Wow - I miss going to jumble sales - need to get back into them. I bought all my stuff at them when I was a teenager - it was the only way I could afford clothes, but more importantly, gave me a brilliant 60s vintage look that nobody else had.
Thanks so much for sharing your finds!
