Fun With A Fiver

Last week the fab Lucy challenged me to put together a whole outfit that cost around £5. Walking into town earlier I realised that today's outfit was a cheapie, too.

This dress was from "The 20p Man" at the Thursday car boot sale and the bag was 20p from another car boot sale several years ago.

These lace-up suede boots were £1 from a car boot sale and the turquoise opaques were a gift from a friend.

1960s Perspex clear rings and black bangles (Inherited from Mum), turquoise plastic bangle (Queen Helga), Black & Silver bangle (50p, car boot sale), Black cocktail ring (50p, Acorns Hospice), Plastic dress rings (25p each, car boot sale)

Enamel earrings (40p, Bay Trading closing down sale)

A total outfit cost of £3.30

I splashed out a grand total of £2 on all these vintage goodies from this morning's town centre flea market,
1960s veiled cocktail hat, Miss Rayne pearlised court shoes, Ackery of London Kelly bag and a 1950s English-made leather Kelly bag and almost had change left from my imaginary £5 note.

I'm not alone in embracing cheap chic. Check out these gorgeous frugalistas:

Janet @ The Gardener's Cottage
Sarah @ Misfits Vintage
Curtise @ The Secondhand Years
Liz @ Rose & Bird
Helga @ Helga Von Trollop
Lakota @ Faith, Hope & Charity Shopping

Don't be shy, share your cheapest outfits, I'd love to see them.

  4. Hmm, I guess my one outfit post I did for the 60s wedding was cheap, but only because most of it was gifts! I wish there was such a thing as a 20p man round here.
Dress from Je T'aime Vintage (gift), 60s tights (gift), shoes (fiver, cheapie shoe shop) earrings 50c (Penneys). Does that count?

  14. I'm in an outfit under a fiver right now, but that's thanks to the generosity of friends and family rather than the keenest eye for a bargain in the word!
Those earrings are wonderful, just shows it pays to look everywhere. The skirt I'm wearing is new from M+S, but was only £3. If it had been in the charity shop with its original £25 tag on it, I'm sure they'd have wanted at least a fiver for it.
Anyway, the point is to buy what you like, not what is cheap. I'm sure if more people shopped around they'd find a favourable balance.

Stunning outfit, that dress is in my top 5 faves, along with the Hawaiian dress.

I will try and do a cheap outfit post for Friday, as always you have me inspired!

  25. Love your outfit today there is a photo of me when i was a little girl with a navy blue dress on same fabric and with the white zig zag pipping on it, your dress reminded me of that. Loving your buys today those shoes are gorgeous and so are those kelly bags. I have to say i picked up a mint condition navy Ackery kelly bag for £2.50 last year and i sold it on ebay for £25 i was shocked to the core. You have some amazing carboots by you..and you have a super eye for a bargain. dee xxx

  37. 'Frugalistas' - what a great word. Your bargains never cease to amaze me. Fabulous £3.30 outfit here. Somehow I never quite manage the incredible prices you achieve, though my clothes shopping costs are still pretty low.

  38. Chheap is cool and pretty!)) Once again - you look amazing. I've always strongly believed that the only thing that matters is great fashion sence, not amount of money preson spends on clothes))
    This dress is so cute!)

  39. Gorgeous dress! And fab boots too - I'll have to have a dig around for my cheapies and see if I can get under a fiver in such style - I seriously doubt it!

  40. I demand to know where you live and the whereabouts of those car boots and your town centre flea market that deliver up such stylishly fantastic bargains!

Having said that, today I dug out my lovely Oska blanket coat bought for £10.99 from our local Oxfam two years ago. Suddenly it's a style which is high fashion this season - something of a bonus but thankfully also a classic. Expensive for a charity shop buy, but almost unused and would have been around £300 new.

  41. Car boot sales sound like the most wonderful thing ever! The only thing I can think of here that is similar is a flea market, and they are few and far between where I am. And certainly not on a week day!
I am going to try this when I travel north later this month, though. What a great challenge!

  44. I want a 20p man!!! Love the pink hat and shoes - and I also love your mannequin head. I wanted one that like for my hairtie display but they were going for £50+ on Ebay! I imagine you picked it up for a song no doubt :)

  45. Did I comment on this post this morning or not?? Am possibly going crazy at the moment! Something looks rather victorian (pardon the pun) about this outfit...not sure why!!

  46. Not many people can pull such a stylish look together for a mere £3.30! You certainly can!

  47. Great work, the dress and the lace up boots looks perfect together. Cant believe the prices, would not be able to find here in Sweden. A damaged H&M blouse at any charity shop is more expensive here than your whole outfit.

Loved your 70s trousers from last post. So perfect!

  48. Looking worth a million dollars, Vix!
Just had so much fun browsing the 2nd hand shops in Berlin... but a whole outfit for a fiver? That's a challenge (which I'll try to tackle - watch this space :)

  49. I love this dress on you - with the boots and the funky floral bag and all your trademark jewellery, it's just fabulous.
    And so are you!!
Makes my outfit-for-a-fiver effort seem a bit poor (and heavily reliant on gifts), but hey, at least I had a go!xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  50. Ah, you have to love cheap chic. I wish I was better at this, I really need to follow you around at a car boot sale one day and steal all your tricks, Vix! :-)

  51. Great outfit! We are (almost) earring twins! I have those earrings, but in purple and mine were from Dotty Ps - spooky!

  52. I'm gonna find men's clothes with that shade of green and black, and I want to achieve a look that is a cross between Gothic and Grunge.

  53. Now that's some smart shopping. I especially like the bag you're wearing. So cute how it looks like an oversize coin purse.
