Lovin' Lurex

As soon as the nights start drawing in I like to ramp up the bling to counteract the gloom.

I was pleased to win this 1970s lurex maxi for £1.20 on eBay earlier this week and even more excited when arrived just in time to wear it to the pub last night.

Liz & Adrian

Isn't the print on Liz's vintage dress fab?

Adrian & Jon
Here's the boys, resplendent in their vintage shirts.

I haven't shared our curry with you for ages. Here's last nights' Rezalla Garlic vegetables and Jaipuri-style vegetables, with chips on the side, naturally.

Lurex is not only sparkly but it's also really warm and perfect when you're walking back home late at night.

It was freezing at chucking out time last night.

Despite the epic amount of booze I knocked back on Friday night I was up, dressed and in the jumble sale queue by 9.30am yesterday. Amongst other things I snaffled a large piece of 1960s lurex threaded crimplene for 10p.

The fabulous Kitty sent me this 1967 Simplicity pattern a while ago and as I was up early this morning I decided to get cracking on this dress.

I wasn't keen on the original length, mid-thigh is far more me.

Handmade dress worn with an up-cycled fake fur collar and suedette platforms (£5, local boutique)

I didn't take my camera out with me on Friday but you're welcome to join us ladies next time, the more the merrier.
I'm off to catch up on all I've missed in blogland while Jon makes pizza.

Hope you've had a brilliant weekend.

See you soon.

  1. You look gorgeous - been drinking the blood of virgins again? Love the lurex, almost as shiny as your smile and hair - but your op print mini dress steals the show.

I had an interesting weekend - techno musical bumps and eyeball cakes for the kids Halloween party on Friday, then we gatecrashed the BBC bar at television centre last night and I drank JD and coke and totally failed to recognise any celebs from Strictly Come Dancing! The people I was with were fans though. Blogs and Downton Abbey tonight - rock n roll!

  2. Lurex is a wonder-fabric. It skims over the body beautifully, keeps shape and requires minimal maintenance.
If I saw you and Liz on a night out, I'd be over in a flash to tell you how lovely you look.
So impressed with your latest make, great shape and length, gorgeous pattern. If my fingers were more nimble I'd be inspired to start dressmaking after seeing you and other bloggers' beautiful creations.
I see lots of fab patterns in the charity shop,do they have to be in your size? They tend to be size 16+

Enjoy your pizza, curry for us.

  9. i just found a really similar pattern! i'm still on the hunt for a suitable fabric though. you look wonderful as usual, and now i want some curry and pizza. sadly for me, my Jon is not skilled in the kitchen :)

  10. You look fab as usual esp in that mini dress and boots. I love those boots.

There is one thing I really want to ask you. As you know I love your hair, and I understand that you cut your own hair. I want to trim my own too as it would save money but I am not sure how to go about doing it.

I have looked on You Tube but people have different ways of doing it and I think your hair always looks fab, therefore I would love to know how you do it? Is there a special knack to it or is it simple?

Sorry deleted above comment due to typing errors xx

  16. I think you look lovely, but I have NEVER been able to to wear Lurex. Being a large lady I steer well clear of Lurex as they seem to add it to clothes to may 'fat' clothes 'glamorous' (if you see what I mean). So even now I am losing weight I can't do it.

I am loving your home sewn dress though, I have so much fabric that I have bought and a lot of old patterns but I am so so scared to start to make things, at the moment that it is all just stacked in my craft shed!

    xx

  18. Hi Vix!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I missed you much!
I cannot believe you made that awesome dress- well yes I can!
    Lurve it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya gave me a great idea to make my dresses pop - a fur collar,Duh!
I rarely wear dresses unless they are under tons of layers as they seem too odd on me, but now I have hope :)
Gonna go chop off some asap!
    Hugs always!

  19. Wow to the dress, wow to the price, wow to the amount of booze and food you can put away and still look ultra thin and wow to your dress-making skills. I've got a few old patterns I picked up at a car boot sale. I used to make my own dresses (and hot pants) when I was in my teens but haven't made any since. Must crank up the sewing machine.
    Love from Mum

  20. ps,
is Lurex a thin sparkly fabric?
I found a fab jacket a while back and think it must be. It is kinda scratchy, but so lovely!
