As promised here's the rest of my weekend haul, displayed in our hall due to the vile weather. On Saturday we had a choice of five jumble sales but went to just one. I've been going to jumbles since I was a dragged along as a toddler and I'm pretty savvy when it comes to knowing which areas are best avoided.
Glass chandelier reduced by 50% in Laura Ashley's 2006 online sale. |
Certain areas are so deprived that they're just best left well alone. When it's a choice of fifty people scrapping over a grubby Asda tee shirt or a quiet afternoon with the Guardian I'll take the latter.
So to my finds and more of the house tour, here's a cuddly faux fur made in England by Astraka. These doors were originally boarded over and painted in white gloss, the ceramic finger plates and knobs are from eBay.
A handmade early 1960's satin shift dress. My collection of vintage umbrellas and parasols are housed in an Austin Reed leather bin I bought from a charity shop.
Three pretty 1950's era satin headscarves. The mosaic tiles were from a discontinued range in a Homebase clearance bin.
Gorgeous British-made pure new wool cape made by Craft Centre.
A selection of vintage hats (and one actually fits me!)
Fabulous chiffon maxi dress very much in the Margo Leadbetter style, the gilded mirror was hauled from a skip. The louvre door marks the entrance to our cupboard of doom aka the cloakroom. It's a traumatic experience trying to wrestle a coat from the depths of that room, I can tell you.
The wallpaper was 99p a roll in Focus's clearance sale, the palm plant was a sale buy, too.
The velvet maxi skirt I'm wearing, unworn with a groovy boutique label, was another of my jumble sale finds. I nearly came to blows with a vicious old granny who tried to wrestle it from me telling me I was too skinny and it wouldn't be any good.
I held on firm and asked if she'd ever heard of a belt. Even the offer to swap me the skirt for a pair of Primark trousers failed to tempt me.
Angela at London Town was a new one on me but I unearthed this fabulous clip from 1965:
Vintage cotton velvet maxi worn with a silver lurex 1970's era blouse (Courtesy of the divine Curtese) , velvet bow belt (the beautiful Sarah Misfit) and velvet platforms (£9, Office sale |
I was so thrilled by your lovely comments yesterday that I took my fab friend Sabine's advice and used her favourite photo as my new blog header, obviously spending a Saturday night in and off the booze works wonders on how I look on a Sunday.
Don't worry, it was a one-off, Tom's success on The Apprentice called for a celebratory drink.
Oooh the perfect blog post, i got to eye up your fabulous jumble buys and your amazing home complete with bargain buys too!! Love it! The header also looks incredible with your super cute photo :o) Scarlett x
ReplyDeleteOOOOOooooooo that blue dress is so so beautiful. And that hall way!
ReplyDeleteI have really been enjoying your house posts. xxxx
oh and i forgot to say, totally agree with knowing which areas to hit for bargains, its the same ropund me for charity shopping but tbh i'd settle for any jumble sale right now, there hasnt been one here for months! Scarlett x
ReplyDeleteI love the lurex shirt but that red shift dress is to die for.
ReplyDeleteI have serious house envy too!
"I nearly came to blows with a vicious old granny who tried to wrestle it from me telling me I was too skinny and it wouldn't be any good." -- highlight of my day!
ReplyDeleteI love that wallpaper - can't believe it was 99p a roll!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm pleased that Tom won the Apprentice!

The new header is pure genius. Love the haul in your hall. The Margo dress look - a - like is fabulous as is the maxi skirt. Well done you for not swapping it for the Primark trews - however tempting they were (NOT)!
ReplyDeleteDearest Vix,
ReplyDeleteI love the stonking new header, you are a vintage style legend!
More fabby buys too, both the dresses are lovely. I also bagged a Margo Leadbetter style frock at yesterday's boot sale. It's been piddling down here most of the day too, I got caught out in the rain earlier and came home looking like a drowned rat...I wish I'd had one of your fabulous umbrellas ;)
I'm not surprised at all that it almost came to blows over that skirt, it's a beauty and I love that funky film clip too.
Take care luv,
Jennie

My My what a gorgeous header you have!
ReplyDeleteI love the mosaic tiles, that wool cape is a beauty & I absolutely adore the wallpaper you have in the room.
I lol'ed about the old granny.
I doubt with a rude woman yesterday in a local thrift. I was looking through the dresses and she saw a dress I picked off the rack and was looking over. She just sat and stared at me (waiting for me to put down the dress) I didn't even want the thing but I waited to put it down *lol* When I did she saw me and swooped in & snatched it like a Hawk on crack!
I do love the new header, and I love your house, It really does come to show the bargains you can find out in the world if your willing to look x
ReplyDeleteHey Vix, love the new header and the hall wall paper.

ReplyDeleteThe sleeves of that blouse are gorgeous and I love that you wrestled with a granny to bag that skirt haha! The stories behind some of your clothing!
I've been looking at wallpaper for our living room recently and I have to say I've been getting very inspired by colourful damask paper!
Long live Tom and his nail files! xxx

ReplyDeletexxxx
nice to see your wallpaper again! hehe
ReplyDeletethe tartan coat is so adorable, I would love that! I also particularly like the painted dress and scarves, but everything is marvellous!
Also the way you described yourself as going to the jumble sales as a baby makes me think of this little streetwise kid tottering around assessing all the wares haha
Hey Vix~
ReplyDeleteIs a jumble sale like an estate sale? Your story about the granny who wanted your skirt cracked me up! You got some lovely things that lavender dress is gorgeous and the chandelier is my favorite! I am also happy to hear one of those cool summery hats fit ya. What did all the ladies have small heads back then or what :)
I am hoping for a lil sunshine for you and I both :)
Your new header is smoking hot because it's you!!!!
Well Vix, I'm lost for words. Not only do we get to see your gorgeous new banner - but the first pic has you in the world's best pointed collar shirt. It just gets better from there - more home touring (OMG!!!!!) and the wonderful tale of the grabbing granny - THEN a dancing catwalk treat! I love the lurex jacket and bra with the white belted flares in the parade - why don't models dance and laugh on the catwalk now? Thank you so much for making my day my lovely friend. Big hugs to you xoxoxoxo

ReplyDeleteThat skirt is fabulous - and well worth fighting off the geriatric old biddy! And it is so perfect with that GORGEOUS blouse - I especially love the mega cuffs.
Your hallway is marvellous - I love all of the different elements individually - and they are perfection all together.
Loveandparasols, Sarah xxx
That new header is so gorgeous (probably because it has you in it)! I love that skirt also - as if there was ever a chance of it not looking fabulous on you. Too skinny, pfft.
ReplyDeletereally love your new header and your jumble sale finds are stunning as always :)

ReplyDeleteWhy is the old dears always want to wrestle you for things?! Bless em eh.
The velvet skirt was worth the fight though.
X x
Brilliant post, I love that you've told us about the item plus a bit about what's in the background! Gosh I don't know if I've got the spine for wrestling grannies at jumble sales - I'd probably slope off with my tail between my legs if anyone said anything like that to me!
ReplyDeleteMy oh my what a perfect new header you have, you look totally stunning!! I do love the fact that you had to wrestle with an old lady for your maxi skirt it was definitely worth the fight!
ReplyDeleteThat 60s shift is amazing. The velvet skirt looks lovely on you, even better since it was hard won.
ReplyDeleteThe new header is gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteSome amazing finds Vix, the chiffon maxi dress is such a gorgeous colour, and I do love a fur coat.
xx
Skirt looks much like the one you sent me (6 more inches to lose and I'm INTO IT PROPERLY), new header is fab, very 'you'.xx.
ReplyDeleteYour new blog header is just fabulous! It really made me smile. The image of you wrestling with the old lady creased me up. I've met one or two old ladies who were really vicious. I've been elbowed and pushed out of the way with handbags more times than I can mention so I'm made up you hung on tight to that skirt. Hope your week is a corker. (It's rainy and windy here, even the cats are curled up and refusing to budge, so I got my knitting out and am knitting up a granny blanket... In July for crying out loud!) Big hugs Sweetie, Em xx
ReplyDeleteLove the new blog header and the red dress they are both gorgeous xx
ReplyDeleteLOVE YOUR CLOTHES!

You do so well on the faux fur front. I have several, all of which I love, but my favourite vintage one (£4 on eBay) is really ratty looking now so I'm on the lookout for a replacement for this winter!
ReplyDeleteVix your new blog header is incredible!
ReplyDeleteI want a greeting card of it ;)
Your new header looks fabulous just like you. Looks so professional. X
