Where Did You Get That Hat?

The Salvation Army, of course! I adore the volunteers in my local charity shop. They'd put this vintage hat aside for me. I'm not cool in the slightest, I'm literally squealing at some of the things they produce, I think they get as much pleasure from my excitement as I do from getting a fabulous bargain.

When I tried it on an old man announced that I looked ridiculous, which coming from someone dressed in a dog printed fleece could only have been a compliment.

Can you get finer friends than our fellow bloggers? This wonderful package was waiting for me from the fabulous Ivy Black yesterday. A peacock card, a 1960's chain belt, a bold and funky satin scarf ...

...and this awesomely humungous pendant which goes perfectly with the lucious yellow cocktail ring the beautiful Sarah Misfit sent me. The silver cuff was another saved treat from the ladies at the Salvation Army.

Vintage sycamore print maxi (£7 local vintage boutique), Tuscan lamb hat (75p Salvation Army)
We're cracking open the rum tonight, my first drop of alcohol since Saturday. Don't worry I won't overdo it this time, there's a jumble sale on in the morning and I'll be needing a clear head to do battle with those vicious Black Country grannies.

  1. Lovely hat, I've wanted one like that for ages but I have a weird paranoia about having an extra-small head so I don't like to draw attention to it!

I wish the people in the charity shops I go to were as nice as that, last time I bought a cardigan some old bloke told me that if it itched, I could bring it back and they'd give me some cream - lovely!

  2. I don't ever think I suit hats, but you carry them of so well. I love that silver jewellery it's absolutely gorgeous. xxx

  3. From Russia with love. Or maybe one of those satellite republics with lots of consonants?

I would be a Black Country granny if I moved just a little up the map! But a very well-behaved one.

I don't think the hat makes you look ridiculous, what was that fleece dog man talking about??!?

  7. Lol - I love your comment about dog fleece man! I've seen those fleece jackets and they're Hideous with a capital H - 'nuff said.

Vix versus Black Country Grannies - seconds away, round one...(as they used to say on the Saturday afternoon wrestling programmes!) xxx

  11. That hat is very funky! They seem to be coming back into fashion now! I see River Island have a good sized collection of vintage style hats atm.

I saw this one - http://www.riverisland.com/Online/women/sale/accessories/black-spike-stud-trilby-hat-594614 - in the sale section and it reminded me of you for some reason! They also have it in beige!

You always have the most interesting jewellery! xxx

  12. I don't think I need to assure you how fabulous you look - I think you should become the national pin-up girl for all vintage shops, Vix! I've got pretty much the same furry hat - inherited from my grandma who NEVER left the house without wearing a hat. xxx

  13. You deserve that and more my beautifu Vix. I can imagen you fighting with the black country grannies hahahahaha.

About the rum, try a Cuba Libre- rum with coke and ice or no ice. I used
to add a bit of brown sugar as well.

  17. LOVE that hat! On me it's looks like a hair piece in black, but on you- a gypsy hat of magic! I love the whole outfit, and the fact you can rock this look any old time and look gorgeous! Dog fleece wearer comments aside- you look to adorable to look ridiculous.

Have fun at your jumble sale, careful on the Devil's rum!

  18. You rock those furry hats, my dear! How do you get the volunteers to save things for you, did you just ask or have they spotted what you buy? Love the dress (think you've shown it before?), and great jewellery. Especially loving the silver cuff - I want one! Thank you for your lovely commet on my blog x

  19. And how rude from dog-print man - there's a woman that walks along my road (I think I know where she lives!) in one of those god-awful fleeces, although I think hers has huskies on it, just for variety. I've seen dalmations, teddies, wolves etc. The horror!

  20. Oh my gawd that frock is AMAZING! The print is divine. And I love all of your gorgeous silver - that pendant matches the ring perfectly! I have a Salvos man who calls me 'the hat lady' and puts hats aside for me too! You look as beautiful as always, Vix!

  23. Funky hat! Dog-fleece people are always a bit grumpy. I often wonder where they buy them- I've never seen them in the shops or markets. Maybe it's a Da Vinci Code style secret society, and they are granted one upon attaining a place in the inner sanctum. Or maybe you can buy them at dog shows.

  32. Dear Vix, never take advice from anyone wearing a fleece! How brilliant!

You look amazing. The dress is wonderful. Love the cocktail ring and the silver jewellery was a great find.

Have a rum for me. I am worn out after FINALLY completing the wardrobe. What a pallaver, it was like the bloody tardis. We also sorted out three large chests of drawers full of crap. I almost lost the will to live.

Hope your parcel arrives soon. Def catch up next week, much love xxx

  41. It's a fabulous hat. I hate those fleeces, they are awful. In a charity shop yesterday I saw a thistle print one and I'm fiercly Scottish but it was just horrid. x

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh man I HATE dog printed fleeces! And you definately dont look ridiculous (altho I have a very similar hat and feel a bit ridiculous when I wear it, hehe) :)

  43. Oh wow I've never seen a leaf print like that before - it's so stunning on you and the wonderful thing about using that fabric for a maxi dress is there's more of it:). The jewellery is utterly delish and I love the hat and gloves - good luck tonight and hope the granny struggle goes smoothly tomorrow:)) xo

  52. You are a thrif store genie!! Lol. I always go to the Salvation Army here and other local thrift stores and NEVER find anything half as cool as your little gems! Sigh. You are so lucky and clever. :)

  53. The hat is amazing but the DRESS! What a divine piece of clothing that is. If only I could turn up such bargains in vintage stores. Seems like it's either cheap but vile (usually 80s tack) or lovely and pricey.

Sounds like the man needed a visit from the Fleece Police.

  57. Wow, you always find such amazing stuff, and SO cheap!!! Just read your tortoise post, strange coincidence but my cousin just lost a tortoise which she'd only had for a few weeks, it got handed in to the vet clinic where she works as someone had found it wandering around and she ended up keeping it, but then it escaped again and ended up in a wildlife sanctuary... it was apparently about 40 years old and turned out to be a protected species!!
Funny how you love vintage so much that you have a vintage pet :) (my cat is fairly vintage too as she is nearly 19!)

  58. Why is it people (like that old man) feel the need to voice their opinion. I don't think the hat looks ridiculous. And him wearing a dog printed fleece lol

I was with a friend once and tried on a hairband which was admitedly was a bit too young for me amd was rather mini mousish but this woman who was about my age but looked much older (haha) was laughing at me right in my face. It did not bother me as she clearly did not have a clue how to dress and I thought to myself well if I looked anything like you love I would be crying!
I personally would never do that to someone else but some people always think they can just make comments!

    ReplyDelete
  59. The man in the dog-printed fleece sure cracks me up. Oh goodness. You sure look ravishing, rather than ridiculous! x

    xxx
Ps. I believe people (and anons) only say these things b/c they see a confident person dressing and living life exactly as they like...and it makes them uncomfortable and probably a little bit jealous ;)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Just to agree with all the other comments saying how fabulous you look ! Anyone with any idea about style would not be seen dead in a fleece of any kind never mind a dog print one! My mum is very glamourous and dresses up for everything, she is always going on about fleeces and how awful they are !
