A Grumble At The Jumble

Whilst rummaging through the heaps of clothes at last night's jumble sale the lady next to me exclaimed, "God, that is DISGUSTING" and threw what she was holding back down on to the table. What was it? A filthy, stained garment? A teeshirt with an obscene logo? No, it was the dress I'm wearing that had caused her outburst.

Ok, electric blue polyester and rhinestones may not be to everyone's taste but I was more than happy to hand over 20p for it.

What else did I get?

A pile of funky vintage fabric for my projects

Marks and Spencers petticoats, a half slip and nude, seamless strapless bra not only with the tags still attached but also in my size (just what I've been after but I'm far too tight to buy one from a shop).

A haul of woolies including a poncho, a couple of Shetlands and an Aran sweater.

A Miss Mary of Sweden 1980's frock and a 1970's coral knife pleated dress and jacket

More vinyl to add to the hundreds we already own. Whatever happened to a Flock of Seagulls?

How honoured am I? My beautiful blogging buddy, Reva, has interviewed me as part of her Blogoversary celebrations!  Reva is a gorgeous, huge-hearted, free-spirited bohemian chick and an essential daily read if you don't know her already.

  7. We don't all have your vision. I know you will make the red and coral outfits look good because it's you but I don't know that anyone other than you could invest some of these pieces with any credibility.

The blue is outstanding but I'd have reacted the same way as your fellow jumblie. I admit I have no sense of style....

  8. Yet again our paths merge, I have a dress exactly like the coral one, 'cept its brown and cream, newly in stock. Snap!

  10. Disgusting? Crazy lady! Of course, not all of us would look as fab in it as you do.

I checked out that interview of you. Reva did an incredible job! And I was happy to be introduced to her great blog.

Say...are you selling on eBay right now? I just did a post on blogging friends who are online sellers - and I couldn't find your eBay shop???

  27. Dear Vix, another great haul. You had me laughing at title of this post. I'm always buying bras like that then losing them for some reason. What a good find when you needed one anyway. I will go over and read your interview, I know I'll love it. I've been an anti-social blogging person this evening so better go and have a drink for a bit! Hope you're having lovely evening xx

  32. Great color! Lately, I've worn a couple of polyester dresses and I have really like how they moved. I am old enough to remember though when the styles began to veer away from that fabric. Nowadays, I wonder why.

I wish I could go shopping with you!

  33. O,feck, that is one spectacular frock!! Adoring the colour & the rhinestones as well as the fabulous fit!!! Looking damned hot!!

  34. Goddamn it I never see jumble sales round here any more! That dress is great on you, silly woman who thought it was disgusting that's not even my era and even I can see it stunning! Still I guess not everyone can have great taste and style like us ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Vix you are fab - even fabber you seem to have magic wardrobe wrangling skillz. Can you do a feature on managing a wardrobe? You see lots of advice out there but more aimed at a 'normal' volume wardrobe - not a vintage/charity-shopped one :) Are you secretly ruthless as to what you keep? Do tell!

  36. Absolutely fabulous finds you've had. That dress is utterly awesome and you rock it!
    xx Comtesse xx

  37. How very odd? I was bracing myself for something really foul, like dirty knickers lol! It's a gorgeous dress! I wish I had loads of jumbles near me. xx

    ReplyDelete
  38. That dress really suits you x

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ha! Isn't it funny - one person will find something 'disgusting' and someone else will squeal with delight over the same item! I have an almost identical dress (same colour, same sleeves, same fabric) only it's a maxi and I LOVE it - if anyone called it 'disgusting' I'd call their sanity into question! You look amazing as always Ms Vix - you are such an inspiration! (And thanks for reply - received and appreciated.) Sarah xxx

  40. haha! that made me giggle! i hope she seen you buying it ;) i love that colour of blue.

  45. I love the translucent bell sleeves of the "DISGUSTING" dress, and the sparkly embellishment makes me think of a stylish snowflake. It would be fun to wear that dress for a holiday party.

Congratulations on the great feature on Reva's blog! I enjoyed it immensely, and will comment there too.

  46. What???? That woman needs her head examined!!!! This dress is divine!! made even more divine by you of course but seriously... WTF is wrong with her???? I too would wear this dress in a heartbeat! It's a vintage treasure.

Donna! Cat!! Ohhh... and you always find treasures honey!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Aren't people bizarre?? If I saw something like that I'd snap it up in a heartbeat (and then send it to you, obviously!) Even if it's not to my personal taste, I'd hope I can appreciate a beautiful, bold piece of clothing whatever form it comes in.

Absolutely love all of the woollies.

ps - your hair is looking gorgeous in these pics.

  48. How rude! I'm so glad you rescued the blue wonder and gave it a good home. xxx

  49. How can anybody not like that frock, the cut & colour is spectacular…it’s that ‘Finnish blue’ that I told you about…maybe her husband had been lured away by Anja the attractive Finnish au-pair girl and that’s why the dress caused her to react excessively?!
    …xXx

  50. oooo... those tights:)) despite the fact that it shows only a bit, that drew my attention.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Love how you wore green nail color with the dress. the color and cut of the dress is just fab!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh My GOD! What a silly stupid woman! that dress is GORGEOUS! You really suit blue. I hope I can find such beautiful treasues like you when I start thirfting to save for my wedding. XXX

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh my that dress was meant to be yours. The sleeves and cut are both lovely. I don’t know how anyone could be so insulting to a piece of fabric! I often hear people mimic clothing in charity shops and think well really you are one to talk when you are wearing nothing too fabulous yourself! Stunning xx

  54. That dress looks fab! I love the colour, especially for the winter. It's nice to wear bright clothing when it's grey, it brightens up everyone's day (except for grumpy jumble sale lady!!) x

    ReplyDelete
  55. The blue dress looks fab with the ankle boots. Great Arran sweater too. xx
