Vix vs The High Street

Waiting for a friend in the town centre a couple of weeks ago I spotted this dress reduced to £5 in a small boutique window. After going in to inspect it I had a mini argument with myself:

Head: Do I really need another maxi dress?
Heart: Of course you do, you wear one nearly every day of your life.
Head: It's modern, everyone and their mother's going to have one
Heart: It's stylish, have you seen anyone else wearing it?
Head: It's going to be acrylic and feel cheap and nasty...........
Heart: No, it's actually 65% cotton
Head: Black makes me look like a goth.
Heart:You don't know what you'll look like till you've tried it on
Head: Actually it does look surprisingly nice.............

Result! A £5 frock that got lots of compliments when I wore it to town today. Have I seen anyone else in the same dress? No. Note to self, stop being such a snob.

We've got a cheapo night in this evening, home-made spicy beanburgers and Cuba Libres made from the last of Jon's birthday rum. There's a few films we've recorded from the TV so we'll watch one later.

Black maxi dress (Local boutique £5), Vintage 1960's leopard waistcoat (Inherited from my mum), Fob watch pendant (Salvation Army 99p) Bangles (India) Rings (India and Tel Aviv)

Have fun whatever you're up to.

  2. Lovely dress - and for a fiver too! Sometimes I love those little boutiques such cheap bits and bobs and I find no one else has the same! It also depends how you wear it - I don't know many who would wear a maxi dress with a leopard print waistcoat!

  7. If you had told me that the dress is one of your vintage finds I would have believed you - it's a great dress and it suits you wonderfully! - but most of all it's a lesson that it comes down to individual styling, and the combination with the leopard waistcoat makes it SPECIAL! xxx

  20. you look fab! love the head/heart dialogue - I'm wearing a pair of cords I scored in our Hospice shop today - great fit and colour, but my inner voice said "no" as they were PerUna - which I generally don't like - but they look great so why should I care!

  26. You look smashing, Vix!!!!
I am a mall snob. I won't even go into high-end shops. I may need to re-think my view ;)
    I love you sooooo much!
As someone told me the other day, I pass this on to you as well:
A woman of your caliber and beauty are a rare find :)

  27. So sexy! Love the leopard vest esp. :)

  28. Oh my...I'm coveting the dress! Love the rows and rows of ruffles, yet the shape stays long and lean.

Nothing wrong with a little gothiness, mind. I wouldn't hesitate to wear it with some medievalish silver jewelry, and either a black or white little cardigan to keep things elegant. I do like the gold locket and chic leopard styling too, of course. You look ready for an editorial, one of the rare editorials featuring things I actually want to wear.

  29. Not only is that a great deal, but you look great! Not gothesque at all! Just plain chic and classy and dramatic lovely!

    Beautiful you!

Oh, and your night sounds like lots of fun! I'm going to a friend's house for a girl's night. Unheard of in my world...and dependent on whether or not the little button goes to sleep shortly...go to sleep button!

  48. It is really really weird how I always get to you so late when you are one of my Top Go To blogs!! As soon as I see a new post from you I zip over here but if I'm in work mode, I look at the pics and then come back later to read and comment... somehow I've fallen behind :(

Ahhh... this was the "black moment".... the dress is fabulous BUT... the vest and the attitude with which you wear it is what truly makes it so fierce!
