Priced at £2.50 but bearing the original price tag of £22.99, this gorgeous gold and blue jute bag reminded me of the bags you always see for sale for £££s in those chi-chi tourist boutiques in Greece.
There's a few charity shops around the corner from the tip so we had a wander, picking up a needlecord cowboy shirt with snap fasteners for the stockroom plus this choice piece of vintage vinyl, Rod Stewart's album Every Picture Tells a Story, released in 1971, for the princely sum of 50p.
I spent the afternoon trying to sort out my clothes for our upcoming trip. After tea we continued watching Pierre, the new Channel 4 series about a West London duty solicitor starring one of our favourite actors, the wonderful David Harewood OBE.
Friday was a swimming day so we left the house at 7am, walked into town and were in the water 20 minutes later. I've recently upped my game and now swim 6km a week (that's 3.75 miles in old money). How's the hip? You know what arthritis is like, it changes from day to day but it's only three more weeks until my appointment with the orthopaedic consultant.
A rummage in the charity shops gleaned a vintage straw boater, a Betty Barclay Y2K fake Afghan coat and a 1980s alpaca and wool Italian-made jumper.
A rummage in the charity shops gleaned a vintage straw boater, a Betty Barclay fake Afghan style coat and a 1980s alpaca and wool Italian-made jumper.
I wore a vintage Afghan dress (bought from a vintage fair in 2017) with a chazza shopped Baker Boy cap and my Swedish Ten Points boots (photo below for 50 and Counting).
Jon dropped me off at True Beauty to get my nails done. Unusually for me I knew what I wanted before I got there, a teal blue, which will compliment the browns and rusts I'm currently embracing.
Later we watched Silver Haze, a British film about a nurse who after a traumatic event 15 years previously is bent upon revenge until she falls in love with one of her patients.
We had a lie-in on Saturday morning and read until 9am. Jon and I walked the long way round to the corner shop and treated ourselves to The Guardian which we read over posh coffees at the kitchen table.
The manager of one of the town centre chazzas thought of me when this Fashion Sketchbook was donated. People always seen to assume I'm good at art when nothing could be further from the truth but I had a go at sketching some of my recent outfits and was quite surprised with the results. It's rather addictive
After the success of last year's school reunion, we decided to do it all over again.
It was my turn to make the tea on Sunday morning, which I brought back to bed and continued with my female-led Western, Nunslinger, which is proving to be a cracking read.
After breakfast I sorted out next year's Glastonbury trader application and then got dressed and spent a couple of hours in the garden with Jon, sweeping up leaves and pruning bushes, dressed in a me-made maxi skirt, a chazza shopped tee-shirt and a secondhand Levi's Type 1 jacket .
The rest of the day was spent reading and sketching and after tea we watched the final of the Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown and the last episode of Pierre (fingers crossed Channel 4 commission a second series, we loved it!)
Today (Monday) kicked off with a 2km swim. There's a problem with the heat pumps so the water was a bit cooler but I barely noticed a difference after the first couple of lengths. The showers, on the other hand, were icy!
We bumped into an old mate in Spoons, had a chat with him and then had a look around the charity shops before walking home. Jon got three 1980s 12" singles, including a white label, and I found a £3 teeshirt with an Eye of Time print which originally came from the Salvador Dali museum in Figueres (which I visited in the 1980s but, being a penniless student, could only afford a postcard from the museum gift shop).
Although it's supposed to warm up later this week, it was chilly enough to need the jacket Nikki gave me to walk down to the pool, which I wore with this 1960s Indian cotton maxi dress a blogging pal sent me back in 2020.

Vix, these daily diary type posts that you write periodically are my absolute favorite! I get ideas for books to read and television shows and movies to watch as well as enjoying reading about the routines you follow to get things done while still enjoying life. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Tess, I'm glad you enjoy them! xxx
DeleteI agree with Tess love the daily diary style posts and so excited to see you are sketching! Lo Ely outfits as ever. Betty
ReplyDeleteThanks, Betty! xxx

ReplyDeleteThe pink dress paired with the biker boots... very nice.
Hopefully, the trees can be preserved. In any case, you look very chic while hugging. :)
Thanks, Andrea! I was worried I might not be able to wear my midi dresses this year as I was struggling to fit my feet into my existing boots! xxx
DeleteI like your update and daily life posts too. So fun to gather with old friends and then ready to schedule another. The Levi jacket with the long dresses is a terrific look for you! I have two denim jackets and can't wait to pair with my new cotton pants. Not today...another 80° plus summer in autumn day.
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely to catch up with some old classmates, Sam! I didn't particularly enjoy school but I was very fond of the girls I spent those 7 years with and they've not changed a bit, funny, intelligent and fiesty!
DeleteWe've had a hot Autumn but not quite as warm as yours! Enjoy every minute, your Winters are long and cold! xxx
Wonder if you've watched East of Eden on Netflix? Not sure Steinbeck would
ReplyDeletehave approved of all the rumpy pumpy that went on but then again, some of it is set in a brothel!Fantastic story though. Shameful act of destruction if they chop those trees down! I love your hair that colour.xx
Ps great scoop on the Rod album. Took me right back!
DeleteI've not seen East of Eden, I shall have to add that one to the list! I bet Steinbeck would have enjoyed a bit of raunchiness!
DeleteI was amazed that the Rod albuum was only 50p, the shop manager can't have been a fan.
All my clothes look different now my hair's so much, I don't know who this woman is when I look in the mirror. xxx
Hey Vix, great to see what you have been up to. I've had my mini-break to Queensland where I lazed about on the beach, swam, ate and read 3 books. My niece and I went traipsing around Melbourne to the galleries and the parks. Catching up with over 80s parents and dinner and drinks at the local bowls club for Friday Night. The days are getting longer and hotter so expect to laid out by the 35o days soon enough. Have a great time on your trip.
ReplyDeleteHello Diane! Your Queensland break sounds wonderfully relaxing, great company, culture and fun. I wish I could nip over to your part of the world, those temperatures sound so enticing! xxx
DeleteVix your sketching is awesome - I love them. Also in awe of your lovely rings. I adore the pottery showdown, but they stopped showing it on New Zealand TV some years ago. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Julie! What a shame you don't get the Pottery throwdown in NZ, its such joyful and cosy telly! xxx
DeleteYour sketches look like design concept drawings - definitely keep on doing them they look fab :)
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks so much, Kate! xxx
DeleteI hope you save the trees. All your outfits look fab as always. The colour of your nails looks great with your rings. Oh my Every Picture Tells A Story. One of my all time best albums. Rod could really sing, not a bad track and also Maggie Bell's great backing voice on the title track blows my mind. Gasoline Alley oh goodness so many great songs. The year I bought this album my cousin my best friend in the whole world went to a boarding school in Coventry for visually impaired children it broke my heart, all the way on the journey we listened to Mandolin Wind from this album and if ever I hear that track I always wipe away a year remembering how sad I felt at his going away. We were only 12. Sorry to ramble. Take care Sue H
ReplyDeleteHello Sue! Music really is magic, I love how a tune will instantly transport us to another time. Goodness me, you must have been so upset when your friend went away to boarding school. xxx
DeleteHi Vix, well done on your swimming and highlighting the need to conserve trees in your area.We all need as many open green spaces as possible. On the clothes front I am loving your beautiful Monsoon and Afghan dresses- lots of lovely colour and texture and pattern together. Why are so many modern clothes so bland? I am partial to a straw boater too. I used to have a lovely Laura Ashley one as a teenager/ young woman. I'm off to see a Led Zep tribute band on Saturday for the first time- I hope they are good. I'm not normally one for tribute bands. X
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alysia! If a friend hadn't alerted me to the plight of those poor trees I'd not have known. I've shared the details on social media and quite a few local people ahve now raised objections with the council. Fingers crossed that they can be saved.
DeleteYou're right about modern clothes, there's no prints and rarely any deviation from black, grey or greige, which is reflected in a lot of the stock donated to the charity shops!
I hope the Led Zep tribute was good. Like you, I'm not a huge fan of tribute bands but I was pleasantly surprised by the Counterfeit Stones a few years ago! xxx
Ooh those glasses do look nice on. I think you’ve done a great job with your sketches, and your teal blue nails are fab. Your swimming prowess puts me to shame xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Louise! Those glasses are quite subtle but I love them! x
DeleteI'm loving the new glasses and your lighter - nearly blonde! - hair colour, Vix, and of course, teal blue with orange and rust? Absolutely!
ReplyDeleteGah, taking out mature trees should be a last resort! The amount of shade they provide, the oxygen they put back into the air, and all the wildlife that live in them. All for a 7-minute savings on the bus? Ridiculous.
Wonderful outfits as always! I miss seeing Sir William, but I'm sure he's sleeping on your bed now that the temps are down to early fall levels.
Thanks, Sheila! I was worried that the return to blonde might look a bit washed out and inspipid but its growing on me!
DeleteIts ridiculous that they are propsing to get rid of those trees, after the Summer we've had they've provided a welcome bit of shade to many of shopper in the town centre this year and don't get me on turning a pedestrianised area into a road again, it'll be a nightmare trying to dodge traffic.
I've captured William today, he'll be on the blog very soon! xxx
You look fabulous as always!
ReplyDeleteYour fashion sketches are amazing.
You really captured the outfits.
Great job with the swimming!
I'm praying for the trees.
Thanks so much, Ivana! xxx
DeleteI didn't know you sketch, hope you will share more of your sketches.
ReplyDeleteThansk, Dora! I didn't know I could sketch! x
DeleteFabulous outfits as always! I'm absolutely loving your latest finds, particularly the Clarks nubuck biker boots and the gold and blue jute bag. The lampshade turned planter is such a clever idea. I've got some enamelled lampshades I've been using the same way :-)
ReplyDeleteYour sketches are fantastic by the way! xxx
Thans, Ann! Great minds think alike with the lampshades as plant holders.
DeleteThat bag is so pretty, I might just hang it on the wall and store my scarves inside it. xxx
That was a fashion and fun filled five days for sure. It would be a crying shame for those lovely trees to be felled. :-(
ReplyDeletePeople assume that I must be artistic, as I'm good at arranging things and general visual merchandising, but my drawings of cats etc are still at primary school level. Your fashion sketches are brilliant.
I really hope that those trees can be saved, Sue. Such a big sacrifice for gaining 7 minutes on a bus!
DeleteYour cats sound like my attempts at drawing them, too! xxx
Loved your outfits! Keep sketching — they looked great to me. Love your daily activities
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! x
DeleteFabulous outfits, and also lovely teal nails (great colour!) and new glasses, I think your lighter haircolour is cool!. I'm loving your finds too, that jute bag is a real bargain!.
ReplyDeleteLove that afghan kaftan and that fab maxi you wore for your meeting (gorgeous), and the riding jacket which is so beautiful!, and fits you like a dream!
I do love to read your posts!
besos
I do enjoy your posts like this.
ReplyDeleteLoving the new nails! Your Afghan is such a pretty one.
My boss is called Ritu. I never noticed it was Ritu Kumar before, I've been reading it as Rita!
