What A Carry On! Packing For A Fortnight In Greece

Kalispera!!

We're off to Greece very soon and staying on an island we've not been to before (exciting!) Although we've got a whopping 22kg check-in luggage allowance included in our trip, we won't be bothering with that. You know us, it's carry-on only!

Why? Even with a walking stick I can easily wheel my little cabin bag behind me when we walk to the station to catch the train to the airport and we'll avoid the scrum at the baggage drop once we get there, passing straight through security and enjoying a pre-flight beer in Spoons whilst our fellow passengers are still queueing. Back in the days when we used to take check-in luggage there were several occasions when the airline mislaid our luggage, reuniting us with it several days later. When you carry everything you're taking there's no danger of that happening!

Travelling light doesn't mean having to compromise on style. With critical thinking and some advance planning you really can fit all you need for a fortnight into a cabin bag. Here's the final cut which I'm sure you'll probably recognise from past holidays.

I bought the recycled sari silk dress from a tiny boutique at Leros harbour when I was waiting for the ferry to Kalymnos last year.

My strapless Star Mela maxi (Vinted, 2023)

Tie-dyed pure silk Red Haute maxi dress (Vinted, 2025)

1970s India Imports of Rhode Island maxi dress (eBay, 2018)

Haris Cotton co-ord (Vinted, 2023)

Uninhibited 1970s gingham maxi dress (charity shop, 2011)

I've packed two bikinis but as they're both reversible, I'm taking four. Both were bought new and unworn with the tags still attached from Vinted. The tropical print/black one was originally Accessorize (£7) and the block print from Fatface (£4).

Accessories - two cotton head scarves, two bags, three pairs of Tevas (I usually make do with two but it seemed a shame not to take my new ones and they only weigh 340g) and a straw fedora. I spotted the sarong for £3 on Vinted, it's from Accessorize and matches my bikini with the £22 price tag still attached.

Jewellery!

I'll put my rings on once I'm though security.

During the day I wear two sets of turquoise studs swapping to bigger earrings by night. I'm taking two pairs..my sterling silver fish tails and these chunky turquoise & silver beauties.

Rather than my usual silver bangles I'm taking this magentic bracelet and these leather wraps which are absolutely brilliant when you're travelling light, you can wear them around your neck, your wrists, around the top of your arm, around the ankle, as a headband or even as a belt.

I'm taking my prescription sunnies, my tinted readers and these groovy sunglasses I bought in Kefalonia in 2024.

Beauty..mascara, eyeliners x 2, eyebrow mascara, a tube of bronze eyeshadow, creme blush, lipliner, lipstick, tweezers, a sharpener and a magnifying mirror.

Hair...lots of clear bands to secure my braids, a comb, a hair band and a hair fork.

Toiletries.

Calypso once a day sun screen decanted into 100ml containers, Once a day facial sun cream, after-sun facial moisturing bar, Lush shampoo and conditioner bars, cotton buds, facial cleansing wipes, soap & loofah soap rest (brilliant for scrubbing your feet!), Lush Karma solid parfum, bamboo toothbrushes, toothpaste and interdentals, painkillers and plasters (only the bare minimum, we can buy them there if we need to), nail scissors, nail clippers and nail file, Jon's blades and shaving gel, my razor, Tresemme hair serum, Swim Cap, facial oil, lip balm and bite gel.

What else? I bought Jon a posh Aegean cotton hamman towel for his birthday last year and he was so impressed he bought me one (link HERE) so this replaces my usual sports towel. There's also a water bottle (like many Greek Islands, the tap water at our destination is safe to drink), my phone, my Kobo (loaded with 22 books), swimming goggles and my walking stick (the chargers are in Jon's bag). The packet contains our Pestects natural mosquito repellent bracelets and do believe the hype, they really work!  Whenever I share my packing I'm asked about knickers and as usual, it's two pairs and always Sloggi Zero Feel nude hipsters - invisible under white clothes.

I'm travelling in my bulkiest dress along with my Granny Square Tevas and carrying my beach bag which will contain my tinted readers, Kobo, my empty water bottle and my jewellery (which I'll put on when I get through security).

Total weight: 8kg

Yassas, see you in July!

  2. Hello Vix,
Have a great holiday, I can’t wait to read about your adventures. I really do enjoy a good packing post, its always fun to see what you both take.
I am having earring envy both pairs are gorgeous.
I have those bracelets!!! and I too use mine when travelling. They are an American brand, called I think Victoria Emmerson. I bought mine on Ebay and they were so handy I managed to get some to gift to friends, they come in so many beautiful colours.
    Safe travels to you both

    1. Thank you so much, MrsCatz! Those bracelets are by Victoria Emerson, i love that they're stamped Victoria on the fastener, they were made for me!!! I saw a gorgeous Greek woman wearing something similar last year and was determined to track some down, much better in the heat than my usual silver bangles! Xxx

  3. Have a fab holiday Vix. If you are going to Crete it’s an excellent holiday. Don’t bother with Knossos, controversial I know but honestly we went last year and it’s very pastiche. Sir Arthur Evans rebuilt lots of it in his own image and we found it very odd and patronising! But wherever you are going i’m sure you will have loads of fun and great adventures. This is Shelagh btw xx

    1. Hello Shelagh! I've been to Crete three times, it was the first Greek Island I ever visited! We went to Knossos in 2022, it was in May so not too busy, we enjoyed it but gave the tour guide the slip and made our own way around. Xxx

    1. Thanks, Louise! I was a optical about those Pestects bracelets, we used them for the first time in Santorini three years ago and they've been a fixture in our travel bags ever since! Xxx

    2. I've been reading Vix's blog for many years and am totally fascinated how she never seems to age at all! But likewise love her packing stories. I used to take 'everything but the kitchen sink' and have improved enormously but always room for more improvement.

  7. Hi Vix, I always love how you share your packing with us in detail. You really know your own style and precisely what is going to be needed/ wanted for your particular destination and do not deviate much from that. It avoids all those ‘ just in case’ items being needlessly added to the case. You have such lovely silk dresses/ sundresses. I too wear quite a lot of silk and people are often surprised at that thinking it needs to be dry- cleaned! I will look for some more reversible bikinis. I used to have one. I think I am one of the very few of my age at my gym to wear a bikini. Like you I tend to wear what I please and hopefully encourage other women to do so too. There are too many rules being bandied about at women of our age. Have a great holiday. X

    1. Thank you so much, Alysia! It's so tempting to over pack when you've got lots of clothes but it's so freeing only having the bare minimum of dresses to chose from for a fortnight plus I can carry my own bag on public transport without needing assistance always a bonus!
Isn't it odd that some people think silk is high maintenance? I washed that blue tie-dyed maxi when I was away last year , hung it in the sunshine and it was ready to wear the same day.
Much as I Iove my Speedo swimsuits for the pool, on the beach it's always a teeny weeny bikini! Xxx

  9. Hello, Vix! Do you have a strategy for picking books for your Kobo? I get completely overwhelmed by all the choices offered for Kindle. Do you make decisions based on price, authors read and liked in the past, or a combination of those restrictions? I would love to know your process for selecting what you want to read while on holiday. Thanks!

    1. Hello, Tess! I tend to check the daily deals (and freebies) first then have at look at Kobo's recommendations based on my previous downloads. If friends recommend books or I discover a new author I'll add them to my wish list and keep an eye on the price.
I love reimaginings of Greek myths when I'm in Greece especially when told from a female perspective and I've got The Voyage Home, the third in Pat Barker's Troy trilogy to look forward to when I'm away! xxx

    2. Thank you for the handy tips, Vix. I loved Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls. I’ll add the rest of the trilogy to my wish list. Thanks again!

  10. I'm really excited to hear about the new island. 🙂
I bought those Pestects bracelets on your recommendation after we had a problem with mozzies in Memorca. They really work!

  12. I love how you pack light but still take everything that you need. Your collection of dresses is fabulous.
I'm definitely with you on the only cabin luggage thing. Who has the time to wait for an hour just to get one' s luggage? This way you walk out of the plane free as a bird🐦.
    Enjoy Greece!

  15. Taking notes! I figure if I'm not hauling things home in the future, I must be able to streamline. Looking fabulous, or in my case passable, on repeat, sounds like it's the best way to travel. Im curious if you've ever traveled in more coolish weather for two weeks and got by with a carry-on?

  18. The ripple effect in the tie-dyed blue silk creates a graceful compliment to your ever-growing-longer rippling locks, Vix And about that length -- this style suits you and your lifestyle beautifully. Pfui on those who grumble women of a certain age shouldn't wear their hair below their sagging jawline. Any woman who's factoring reversible bikinis into her packing budget can wear whatever she chooses!

  20. I always enjoy so much your luggage posts!, lots of useful info and tips!.
Absolutely fabulous that you could fit two pairs of sandals in your baggage!. I think you're going to wear them a lot and so clever they're water-resistant too, really versatile!. I'm admiring that also versatile jewellery which makes a difference!, lots of turquoise and blue which I think that looks so appropriate and enhance everything you wear!
    Lovely post!
Looking forward to reading about your travel!

  23. How lovely! have a fabulous time and can't wait to see all the pics and read all about your travels. Your packing is excellent, I am going to have to travel very light for a trip in November so will be practicing my packing and following your tips. Reversible bikinis were a great find and how lucky that the matching sarong popped up! I have tried the tevios sandals but they don't work for me as I have a broken/mis-shapen heel but for you, fantastic! sensible and pretty. 2 pairs of nickers lol!

  25. You travel so light! I think one of my outfits weighs as much as three of your splendid dresses.

I have friends who travel a lot and they all swear by hammam towels.
