Bus Stop!

As I do occasionally, I've been having a wardrobe reshuffle and selling clothes & accessories which no longer bring me joy. The funds are rapidly building up and Vinted, keen for me not to withdraw my money, keep tempting me with things they know I'll love.

Lee Bender at Bus Stop for £10! Now that's what I call vintage gold.

To those unfamiliar with
Bus Stop, it was a boutique established by Lee Bender and her husband Cecil in London in 1968, the name chosen to reflect something the couple considered identifiably British. The Kensington store became a chain of twelve boutiques and was bought by French Connection in 1979. Sadly Lee Bender died in 2023. I was astonished to discover that she had followed me on Twitter (I'm not on it now).

I regularly visited Birmingham's branch of Bus Stop with my mum in the 1960s and '70s. She bought me my very first grown-up size piece of clothing, a olive green satin jumpsuit, for my 13th birthday.

I found this amazing Bus Stop suit in a charity shop back in 2023 for the princely sum of £10. I've still not got round to wearing it, I really should rectify that.

Here's my Vinted find - a gorgeous 1970s wool maxi skirt, chevron striped and the perfect length and fit.

Last Friday, whilst roaming the charity shops on the way home from swimming, one of the volunteers told me that someone had just donated a bag of jewellery and would I like to look before it went on the shop floor...did I need asking?!

Most of it was blingy high street stuff and not my thing at all but this caught my eye, a 1960s pewter pendant by R Tenne of Sweden which the assistant said I could have for £1!

My Bus Stop / Swedish pendant combo was Tuesday's outfit for a trip to the newly opened council tip, the biggest in Europe (HERE), there's a tip shop with some incredibly cheap furniture and homewares but there was nothing to tempt us, we fared better in the nearby charity shops.

On Wednesday morning for walking down to the pool for our early morning swim, I wore this vintage 1970s Ian Rayment hat I'd bought from a charity shop on a road trip to Tewkesbury back in 2019 and had completely forgotten about. It added a new dimension to a couple of my oft-worn wardrobe staples, the maxi dress and velvet wrap top I bought new! from All About Audrey a couple of years ago.

We had a couple of gloriously sunny and warm days this week. I didn't even need a coat to walk down to drop my parcels off on Thursday morning.

This outfit made me happy, I've owned all three pieces for a while...a second hand blouse by Indian designer, Bhamami by Jyoti, sold in Anthropologie, a vintage Ayesha Davar waistcoat and my Anokhi maxi dress...but hadn't worn them together before. Indian block prints go together like magic.

Other than a multipack of trainer socks, which ended up in the bin after their first wearing, I've never shopped in Pr*mark. I spotted this maxi skirt in a charity shop this morning and despite the brand thought the skirt had potential so handed over my £2.

The fit isn't great.. I don't think women have waists any more...but I love how it looks teamed with another of my All About Audrey tops (this green one was bought via Vinted), my 1970s Falmers denim waistcoat and trusty Australian-made cowboy hat.

My new to me bag from Vinted deserves a special mention, it's a Santa Fe Kilim bag with leather and rope handles and is the perfect size for lugging my swimming gear around. Google Lens tells me that it originally retailed for $299, I paid £10!

When I poppd into the charity shop earlier, I noticed that they'd got a few more Holland & Barrett boxed toilteries, now reduced to £1. I tried the Beauty Balm when I got home, its amazing and with a SPF 15, too!

Here's our recent charity shop finds. The festival offers are starting to roll in so stock's foremost in our minds!

Two x 1990s deadstock rayon hippy tops with lace-up backs, 1980s gents' leather waistcoat, an offical Indiana Jones fedora (who knew?), the mostly insanely fabulous 1960s hat ever - violet velvet trimmed with shocking pink marabou feathers (if they didn't bore the pants off me I almost want to be invited to a wedding just to wear it!), 1960s American dagger collar shirt by Arrow.

A so bad, its cool 1980s shaggy jumper, 1960s dagger collar shirt by Van Heusen, a 1980s rainbow sequin biker jacket by Panache of London, a tiger print leisure shirt, two Day of the Dead bandanas, printed in Mexico (Jon's claimed these!) and a 1970s Liz Claiborne maxi dress.

Another 1990s deadstock rayon hippy top, a fabulous pair of stack-heeled 1970s leather brogues (these fit me...tempted!), a 1970s batik Greek tourist shirt and a Y2K Coast silk cocktail dress with an asymetric hem (the kids are obsessed with this style of dress!)

We've finished watching both seasons of Poker Face and loved every moment, if you can find it I can't recommend it highly enough, one of my favourite series ever! I wanna hang out with Charlie Cale (and steal her wardrobe).  We've just started Landman, it's written by Taylor Sheridan, a master of the Neo-Western and so far, so good, especially Tommy, the always excellent Billy Bob Thornton's character.

Jon's just called me, the bar's just about to open. Have a bostin' weekend! Cheers!

  1. I was once asked to work in Bus Stop in Edinburgh but I declined on account that it seemed to me only the uber-coolest of chicks worked there and I would have suffered inconsolably with imposter's syndrome!! I did however become a regular customer, favouring their crushed velvet skirts and dresses! I love the pic of you in your satin jumpsuit. There's a new Taylor Sheridan thingy beginning next week on Netflix I think, starring Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer. It's got Madison in the title! I'm bingeing The Lincoln Lawyer presently.Have a great weekend Chiquitita!xxx

    1. No!!! What a shame you missed out on working at Bus Stop in Edinburgh. They wouldn't have asked you if they didn't think you were cool. the girls in the Birmingham branch were fabulous - a great advery for the groovy gear!
We're halfway through seris 2 of Landman so I shall hunt that new Taylor Sheridan series out. Have you seen Dark Winds yet? Season 4 is just airing. It's set in the late 60s/early 1970s and the clothes are magnificent! Have abostin' weekend, bab! xxxx

  2. Well done to Jon for opening the bar!
Have a bostin weekend babs 🤩
    P.S.
I really enjoyed Landman, and am waiting for the next series.

    1. Alright, bab! Jon's never slow at opening the bar even if he's got the man flu!
Fab to see you on Sunday. Wasn't the film amazing?
Landman is so good, Billy Bob is hilarious! xxx

  3. I always love how you layer your outfits...and so many unique pieces. Isn't it great when new pieces just effortlessly work with our wardrobe? It is also great when we can shop in our closets.
The Indian block prints do work perfect together. The outfit with the pieces you have had worn separately, but haven't worn together up to now is my favourite one.
Nice new finds. I like the hippie tops and the leather waistcoat.

    1. Thanks so much, Ivana! i think if we fill our wardrobes with clothes we truly loe (rather than by things because we;ve been influenced by a magazine or a celebrity) there's a good chance they're going to go together..in my head anyway! xxx

  4. Oooh top swag as usual Vix - the mad 1960s hat is a beautiful thing as are those brogues. The Rita Ora skirt for £2 is about right - but is it fraying at the seams already (I see a wee one on your photo)? Off to Mrs Kaur I say lol!!

Your photo with the satin jumpsuit is just delightful - is your hair crimped? I used to crimp the living shite out of my hair - can you still buy crimpers? (OMG yes you can - I just Googled it). I'm still trying on all of my clothes to see what still fits which is adding to my rolling-around-in-the-dressing-up-box outfits. I still cannot wear my bangles, wafty anything or any kind of elevated shoe. However, the time it takes me to put on a pair of socks is getting better.

In other news, I sent you an email which bounced back - I've resent it and hopefully you'll receive it this time.

    1. Aghhhh! I left a huge comment and bloody Google ate it! That hat and those brogues are the kind of things that confirm that charity shopping is still brilliant, beautiful things that even if they're never worn again can be loved abd admired.
the Primarni skirt is intact (I think) although the waistband facing isn't the best. I do have an overlocker although it scares the bejesus out of me!
I absolutely adored my Babyliss crimpers, I had them when I was 13 and I think they were still going strong well into my 30s! I didn't know you could stil buy them (step away from the Argos catalogue, Vix!) xxx

  5. I'm sure you found all the "Rune Tennesmed" pieces online - I thought it was interesting that he changed his name to Tennesmed - meaning pewtersmith. I see pieces like your pendant for $75+!
Loved seeing the pic of you in you satin Bus Stop outfit! Rita Ora has a clothing line? Who knew?
I always think of you and Jon when I'm out thrifting. That hot pink hat is amazing!

    1. Hi Sheila! I did find some gorgeous Rune pieces online but missed that fascinating fact about his name change, thanks for that!
I Iove Rita Ora especially as she's a fellow cat lover. The posters of her modelling her Primarni range make the clothes look really good, mind you, shed look great in a bin bag!
That hat is incredible, the marabou feathers are insanely bright! X

  6. Hi Vix, your Swedish pendant is a lucky find, I really like it. Primarni stuff can sometimes be a pleasant surprise, but I find the materials are poor quality and so don't last long, they have got better at offering recycled fabrics though. The only thing I buy is hoodies for the allotment and their towels are very good. I remember Bus Stop, it was affordable fashion back in the day but the dress/blouse labels were big and scratchy on my neck! Betty

    1. Thanks, Betty! I love the typically 1960s shape of that pendant.
I didn't know that Primarni sold homewares! I'm always a bit dubious about companies claiming to make clothes out of recycled materials, there was a brand a few years ago who were paying a company to produce plastic bottles which were instantly turned into fleeces, claiming to be sustainable!
Those Bus Stop labels are gorgeous to look at but you're right, they really do scratch! X

  7. Fab outfits as usual and love the blast from the past with the satin jumpsuit.
I slightly cringed when you wrote Australian cowboy hat ... I'd say stockman for cowboy and is it an Akubra?

    1. Hello, Amanda! I live in hope of the people who bought my parental home finding that jumpsuit, they've unearthed some of my toys and a sackful of birthday cards in recent years.
The hat is by a Australian company called Jacaru (but bought second hand). I've looked at the Australian website and they have stockman hats but on the UK sites selling the brand, they're cowboy hats! Same language but many differences! X

  8. Yay! I'm soooo glad you found that Bus Stop skirt as it came up on my Vinted feed too but I'm a size 8-10 & 5'6 so definitely wasn't going to work for me! You ended up nabbing the beautiful turquoise mexican maxi from Vinted in the summer (think you've worn it to several festivals since) I had that in my Vinted 'favourites' knowing it would be too small but just there to admire and hope the algorithm would pick up another similar for me 😆 Was very chuffed to see that it was you that bought it in the end! Have a great weekend. Rachael xxx

    1. Rachael! that's so funny, that's exactly what I do whe I see something on Vinted that won't work for me, I favourite it and keep checking back until it's sold! You did wel to see that skirt, I think it had been listed for 6 minuted whe I saw it.
I was amazed to find that Mexican dress a couple of years ago, it had been listed for ages and it was a really good price. xxxx

  9. These are such beautiful outfits again, and you've got some great bargains too. The skirt from Bus Stop is fantastic. I also love the photo of you in the shiny olive green jumpsuit. You look lovely in your outfits, both now and back then.
It's amazing that Lee Bender followed you on Twitter. I have a funny follower myself. Gavin Rossdale :D has been following me for over 10 years now. And Lene Lovich follows me on Instagram, which I absolutely love.

    Happy Weekend

  10. Ah, that violet velvet hat with the unbelievably glamourous pink marabou feathers! Having no suitable occasion to wear it isn't necessarily a problem, Vix. I'd dub it "wearable art" and display it on a head model. * Note that I've begun buying such garments too small or too fragile to wear and hanging them as art on bedroom/closet doors. Love the tatty beadwork and sequins! - Beth

    1. I'm a big fab of the vintage fashion as art as well, Beth! My Twiggy head is currently modelling my great grandfather;s top hat whilst the others hang off the wall! You're a bad influence, after reading your comment at the weekend I bought an antique Afghan Kuchi salt bag from Vinted, it was too cheap not to and I figured it would make a fabulous decoration if it proved impractical to use! xxx

  13. Vix, I would really appreciate your advice. I recently bought a lovely Brown suede fringed waistcoat. Its not dirty or stained but just a bit of that charity shop smell. Can I wash it or how would I freshen it up? Thank you.

    1. Hello Anonymous. I'm sure I've mentioned it on my blog before but suede is washable, I usually wash it alone on our 15°C cool cycle (using some liquid hand soap), give it a good shale and hang it up to dry. it usually does the trick. xxx
PS Liking the sound of the waistcoat!

Also loving how you layer your block prints and summery dresses and those fab velvet tops with Massive Sleeves or waistcoats on top!, so gorgeous!.
Still coats season here too (not so sunny in the Sunny Spain!), so your fabulous outfits are an inspiration!.

  16. Hi Vix. Congratulations on your gorgeous Bus Stop skirt. Lucky you having a Bus Stop suit too. I love how you have styled the skirt with the waistcoat, hat and pendant. It instantly reflects your personality as should all good clothing. I hate how much of social media now wants to turn us all into clones of each other with no consideration of our own individual sense of taste and style. The Indian block prints combined with each other are beautiful. I recently found a lovely 1950s dressing gown/ housecoat in great condition ( at a charity shop) for a friend ( a vintage dealer).

I'm liking the sound of that dressing gown, They're often pretty enough to wear as outer wear. I found a beautiful kimono this week whcih I think might become a layer over belbottoms or a maxi dress! xxx

  18. I used to love browsing our branch of Bus Stop in Manchester's Piccadilly area way back in the early 1970's, it was super cool, and rather handily right near my bus stop to get the bus home, no wonder I was always tempted to go in. Sadly I didn't have the funds to be able to buy much back then though.
