Who are these people that give away once worn clothes to charity shops? Its a question I often ponder over when I'm flicking through the rails of pristine high street dresses seen on fashion bloggers only a few weeks previously. Are folk really so fickle that their tastes can change in a matter of days?
I bought this John Marks velvet maxi dress back in 2009 and love it as much now as I did then. I remember how I felt when I first saw it, getting all hot and bothered, my heart skipping a beat, knowing that it had to be mine. No doubt I'll still be wearing it as a pensioner (if I'm around that long).
Tell me I'm not alone in loving something and staying faithful to it for years (clothes, books, bands, films, friends, Barry M, men...). Recycling the same old frocks might not make for the most exciting outfit posts on my blog but it's easier on my bank account.

It was mild this morning so I ditched the coat for a trip into town but before you worry, I was layered up like the Michelin man underneath it, it's amazing what you can hide under a maxi - thermal undies & fleece-lined leggings to name but a few.
My gorgeous friend, Dee sent me this pretty Siamese dancer pendant for Xmas, isn't she a beauty?
Did I mention town? Obviously I couldn't walk past the chazzas without picking up two 1970s maxis (sadly both too big and destined for next week's vintage fair), a cute 1960s knit, a classic Kelly bag and a beaded Colony of Hong Kong purse. This month's edition of Harper's Bazaar was 20p and still contained all the product samples - evidently another local woman with money to burn.

1960s velvet maxi (Vintage Village @ Clothes Show Live) worn with striped top (seen HERE), 1970s Madeira shopper (seen HERE), a heap of junk jewellery, including earrings from rock star Helga and THESE boots. |
What are your plans for this weekend? Mine involves a dinner party, copious amounts of booze and some sewing, it's been far too long.
Have a good one and see you soon!
Nope you're not alone. I have shmutter I still love and remain faithful to, not to mention art and books and people. I will love James Stewart until I'm on my way out. That maxi deserved to be adored forever and you will be in it as a pensioner for sure.
ReplyDeleteI've a bit of teaching, some baking and maybe a cinema trip this weekend. My son is back from Cardiff for a visit too.
Have a bloody fab one.
Loves ya.
xxxxxx
Those colours look fabulous on you!
ReplyDeleteI have clothes I had when I was fourteen that I still wear, I have never understood why people part with things so readily just because they're not what fashion dictates is the thing to be seen in xxx
You look great - like a ray of sunshine in the grey! I don't give enough things to my local shops because they're either too worn out because I've loved them enough or they're too small and might as well save them for my own girls to wear. I love all my stuff and hang on to them for decades - that's why I've so much!
ReplyDeleteWe might venture out for a pub lunch Saturday and will cooking a Sunday roast for family at home. Too exciting! x
I can be fickle with clothes at times, but I have a lot that I'll wear until they fall apart! Funnily enough most of it is second hand stuff I've picked up... Love the co-ordination of your long sleeves and your maxi! Have a lovely weekend, I'll be having a few glasses of wine to relax after all my hours in the library this week! x
ReplyDeleteCor blimey - love that colour combo and the stripes/print clash!
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone, I wear things I love year after year (and add a few new-to-me purchases along the way)
Have a fab weekend :D xx

Love today's outfit, definitely a forever find. I do have one cardigan in bright pink that I got at age 15 that I still wear and will till it disintegrates. Otherwise I wear clothes, most thrifted til I am sick of them or they fall apart even with mending.
ReplyDeleteThese colours look divine on you. You are especially radiant in the above images. Shopping does wonders for a girl's skin;)
ReplyDeleteHappy sewing and enjoy the weekend my lovely.xxx
This colorful maxi with stripe sleeves is unique & I really like! I am still surprised at the amount of beautiful clothes found in thrift shops....some still with tags. When I was a kid trifling with my Nanny there was not much to choose from but now we have become so disposable with our garments. Spending time with my girls this weekend....have a good one!
ReplyDeleteDenise
Love the colour combo and your look so great - glorious and healthy after your holiday!
ReplyDeleteIf you love what you wear - keep It!
My weekend started with stumac ace but hopefully im going to a b-day party tomorrow .
What a FABULOUS Maxi--love the print and colors and how you've paired it with the striped T and purse!!
ReplyDeleteWhat gets me is finding stuff in the thrifts with the price tags still attached. I can't believe someone paid that price and NEVER wore it!!
My weekend involves getting the bathroom back together-doing some
Valentines decorating and FOOTBALL!!! (our local team the Ravens are in the Superbowl!!)_
Nope, you're not crazy at all, Vix. When I think of all the great stuff I've let go of over the years I want to cry (all that 90s grungy fashion!). I think our culture encourages us to be 'disposable,' to a very large extent. You have one fabulous maxi there and you've clearly found many amazing ways to wear it!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend. We're having a dinner party too, where there will be lots of booze for the hubbies but only water and juice for their pregnant wives, alas! xoxo
With your knack for styling, that dress looks completely different in each photo. It's a beauty and I would keep if forever, too. I particularly like today's look.
ReplyDeleteI have jewelery and clothes that I've had since my teens.
BAM! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThat dress just might be the best of your collection, I am jealous every time you wear it! I also keep things for ages and ages, it's a problem when you have great taste, an appreciation for the thrill of charity shopping, and limited wardrobe space. I have clothes and jewelry that I have had for twenty years - which is just under 2/3 of my life so far!
ReplyDeleteRock on, Vix.
Ooh that dress is a stunner! I can see why you love it so much.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous frock Vix and very pretty eye makeup.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great weekend. Sewing is on my list of activities too.
Dx
I put in a lot of weight in my mid 20s so got rid of a lot of clothes. Now lost it again, so have donated all the fat girl clothes. However, what's in my wardrobe now has been there for the last 5 years & will remain there until it falls apart!
ReplyDeleteMy heart is skipping many beats now that I see you in all your glory!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous combination, the lovely print, the stripes and the bag all in a red and green awesomeness!!
I used to have a fairy tales book with those colours on the cover and I remember my surprise to find out that the combination creates a flashing optical illusion and the colours moved as they were alive!
I really love this outfit and you!
Have a wonderful weekend!!
xxxxx
I adore that velvet dress on you, I've seen it before and each time I love it. I love it on its own, I love it with that top, I love it as a jacket, I love it with that bag, which I also love. Am I making myself clear?
ReplyDeleteI have clothes that I have hung on to for years because I love them, but I also have rushes of blood to the head when I think 'declutter, declutter, declutter' and then I can be awfully ruthless and sometimes get it badly wrong and wonder what possessed me.
My weekend involves being at home and seeing friends, plus some DIY. And some alcodrops for medicinal reasons (to keep me healthy). Nice!
xxxx
Love your blast of colour! I bet you cheered up your locale with that lovely ensemble.
ReplyDeleteYeah I am the same very rarely do I suddenly dislike something clothes wise (come to think of it music and book and film wise). If I have a declutter in my wardrobe its usually the sort of things I have either been passed on to me and never looked right. Most of the clothes I have I wear to breaking point. My favourite item at the moment it a cute little skater dress in black, it sounds dull but teamed with some loud leggings looks great and is really great to wear too. My sister is one of those though that buys clothes, bags and shoes and takes them to the charity shop. (I don't get much of look in sadly -though she had recently gone mad with e-bay.)
A quite calm before the storm weekend for us, as there are birthdays to celebrate next weekend and the weekend after. Hope you have good one yours sounds like my kind of fun!
P x
Muy bonito el vestido, me encanta el colgante.
ReplyDeleteSaludos
http://judithbysucre.blogspot.com.es
It's funny that you comment about wearing the same items over again. I sometimes wonder if my readers bore of my combinations although the vast majority if my wardrobe is thrifted, handmade and gifted pieces, I don't have what I would say is a massive collection to mix and match with. Vintage takes time and patience to acquire, sure if I wanted to I could pack and overload my drawers and wardrobe with clothing from chain stores. But to be honest I can't think of anything worse and more suffocating. I will just continue to try and be patient about finding, sourcing, acquiring the right pieces for me until then hike my readers are happy seeing me hash and re-hash different combinations. It's not such a bad thing, it gets you thinking outside the box and to hell with it and just trying it out.
ReplyDeleteAs a precious posted mentioned your made that maxi look different in all the pics. It really isn't hard with the gorgeous print and your gorgeous self in it. I particularly love it with stripped long sleeve tee underneath. As always dear Vix you are inspiration and a sweet positive soul with your lovely words. X
Amazing dress and you look beautiful in it. I'm not surprised it's a favourite! x
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you for a second for wanting to hang onto that beauty. It looks terrific on you! I'm with you in regards to keeping the things I love for a very long time. I even have a house plant that I started as a cutting when I was a preteen. That thing has been with me on every move I've made in life and now stands taller than I do.
ReplyDeleteI do love the vintage handbag you found. Very nice.
This weekend we have a petty to go to which will probably involve copious amounts of booze too! Let the good times roll.
You work this outfit so well Vix!
ReplyDeleteLooking fab as ever! I wear things until they wear out if I really love them.
ReplyDeleteAm constantly amazed at your charity shop finds!
The maxi looks fab in all the photos. I never seem to be able to afford a 'new season' wardrobe or any of that jazz...I look at fashion spreads in magazines and scoff at the prices...if only I had £200 to spend on a bag..I'd rather spend it on a jewellery making workshop or a little adventure in the UK.
ReplyDeleteMega rant over.
Have a fab weekend Xx
Amazing Vix! You are definitely giving this frock justice, wearing it brilliantly. I love the colours so much together! :) Enjoy the w/e. xx/Madison
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I have clothes that I've had for years and years (and years). FAshion is so "throw-away" these days (actually, as is everything). Love how you've paired the dress with that delicious looking stripey top. Have a fabulous w/end. I know I will! xx
ReplyDeleteYour blog is one of the most visually exciting in my eyes! I really don't enjoy the new mass market fashion style blogs for the most part. Too predictable really. I'd much rather see uniqueness and vintage finds.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous print on you and especially paired with the stripes. Very playful!
Oh, Vix, I fall in love with things and just cannot part with them! Yes, I am with you on that. I am sad to think of things I have had to get rid of due to moving, downsizing, something falling apart. Love your bright colors today!!
ReplyDeletexoxo
Lynn Dylan
i wonder that too. but all i can say is...thank god for them!
ReplyDeleteand also, i have given things to the charity shops that no longer fit so maybe that is it?
i love your dress and necklace.
looks like your weather has improved. have a lovely one. xo
What happened to all of your snow? The dress is to die for!!! You really look stunning in bright colors and the Siamese pendant is gorgeous! Have a fantastic weekend.
ReplyDeleteGod you look stunning!!! It is the hair, the tan, the colourful clothes.... or just you???
ReplyDeleteHehe. If I like something I keep it until it falls apart. Sadly they fall apart all too soon sometimes.
I do donate some stuff to chazzas - things which I shouldn't have bought in the first place - but I'm working on making this less and less (i.e. don't buy stuff which doesn't suit/ I won't wear in the first place. Dead obvious really).
You're not alone Vix! Most of my wardrobe is years old, made by me, purchased from nz indie designers (who tend to put a lot of work & love into their products, so they last!) or op shopped. I certainly still wear things I bought in 2009:) Your frock is really lovely! Its great you can style it so many ways.
ReplyDeleteOoh, so vibrant! I never feel like I see you wearing the same things! That top underneath is particularly lovely!x
ReplyDeleteWow gorgeous colors on you!! you look beautiful ~Have a great weekend Love Heather
ReplyDeleteI used to have a roommate that Hated that I wore second hand clothes. She would shudder and say,"I can't believe you're wearing clothes that belong to Dead People!!!" Is that where they came from? I don't care. Let the clothes live on!! You look like an adorable sexy elf. PS I love your three things!
ReplyDeleteConnie*
I have a dress I bought in 1988 and still wear.
ReplyDeleteI love the dress with the striped top.Looks fabulous with the tan.
I ADORE the stripes under that dress! It's perfect. I thought it was one piece at first!
ReplyDeleteBeeutiful dress!reminds me of a lush jungle!
ReplyDeleteAll the clothes I have given away have been clothes purchased on a whim at malls...retail therapy in my 20's.
I dont do that anymore, I dont look in my closet and grimace..I love it all!
Have a wonderful weekend!
The velvet maxi is killer-- so great with the striped zippered shirt! Have fun at your dinner party :)
ReplyDeleteThis outfit is zany in a make my heart sing kinda way! I love the strips with the bold print! You are a walking work of art! That Madeira bag is just the right tough too. I'm with you, I have dresses I wear over an over again because I love them. Sometime I need to remind myself I need only go to my closet to find something fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHope to speak soon.
Lotsoflove!!!
XXXOXOOXOX
Who has the heart to throw away a month old frock? It really is sad to think people don't value anything these days. I still have a fair share of clothes from my teenage years and will never part with something that brings me so much joy - regardless if I've already worn it 100 times over. You are the queen of frugal and that dress and those stripes look glorious! xxx
ReplyDeleteIt's a great dress, I'm quite happy to see it again! I have lots of clothes I wear time and again, although I've made my fair share of mistakes too! Dull weekend of child duties again, but there is a jumble sale tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYour outfit makes my heart skip a beat.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy seeing that frock every time you wear it, such a stunning garment.
You have styled it impeccably in the past but this has got to be my fave...it looks AWESOME with that stripy top!
I also want to compliment you on your gorgeously fresh face; you look positively radiant!
My mum kindly sent over a small tub of very expensive eye-cream after I moaned about having groTesco like bags under my eyes, I'm keeping my fingers crossed it'll work cause my mug looks as if it is having a severe bout of SAD.
As regards to “fickle folk”, partly I think it's because a lot of people really get off on shopping, it makes them feel good for a little while, they buy shit that they don't really need/want just to get that shopping buzz, I do that myself sometimes.
I also think that some people are completely swept away by the corporate fashion industry’s fast fashion agenda with frigging “must haves” that change every few weeks. I pity their bank balance that’s all I can say.
Have a great Friday night you gorgeous looking woman and say hello to Jon.
Lot’s of love,
Jennie
xXx
Some items of mine have stayed with me for years too. Quite often the favourites have to retire because they've worn out rather than I'm bored of them x
ReplyDeleteI am always surprised at the never been worn nature of clothes in a lot of places. There can't be that many people who buy a size too small in hopes of getting into something! I mean, most people have more sense than me... I mean than that, right?
ReplyDeleteWhen I find the all too rare clothing item that makes my heart skip a beat it will be a long term love affair, there are several items in my wardrobe like that. We are off to Edinburgh for the weekend, a surprise trip I have planned to celebrate my other half's birthday. xxx
ReplyDeleteLove the flowers and stripes, I first thought the top was the dresses sleeves. I love finding brand new clothes with the store tag on them. Geez, if you get it home and don't like it, take it back. But thanks rich ladies.
ReplyDeletePS: the Doctor says "Thanks"
You look gorgeous! Still got that post-Goa glow :-)
ReplyDeleteHow do you keep your hair in such beautiful condition? I'm in awe....
I'm with you Vix, while I have sent the odd thing off to charity barely worn it's usually because I didn't love it in the first place. Mostly I keep my clothes for years and years and wear them over and over. I like making them look different with different combos, like you've done with this fabulously bright dress. Happy weekend. X
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone, I wear my clothes over and over again, especially those favourite pieces. The longer I've had an item of clothing, the better - I like longevity. And with those favourites there are always endless ways to style them, even with elaborate pieces.
ReplyDeleteI purge my wardrobe about twice a year; in the fall and in the spring. I don't feel bad about letting things go because I pay so little for them in the first place. But, yes, like you, Vix, I have things I've had for years. Even if I had money to burn, I'd be no different.
ReplyDeleteSewing this weekend as well in addition to hitting the monthly flea market. Will be thinking about you. Have a great weekend! :)
xxx
I'm always impressed by the vintage (and nearly new!) treasures you find. Seriously your smart shopping skills are a gift. Happy sewin' and drinkin'! :-)
ReplyDeleteoh the maxi dresses are wonderful finds. I've had no luck in charity shops here for ages - the prices are huge and the majority of stuff is Primark - i need a change of scene!
ReplyDeleteI used to give away lots to charity shops when I was younger. Think I bought a lot of cheap tat and whatever I thought I should wear as opposed to what I actually felt comfortable in. Now I'm the opposite and find it hard to part with anything!
xox
My plans are to sip cough medicine and bark orders from the sofa lol. Oh my wee kelly bag split at the seems, my Mum tutted and said, well you know they weren't made for huge purses and mobile phones, (which is true). I am hoping it can be mended. I LOVE your dress, and I would have been excited to find it too :) Re: the nearly new stuff, some people must have more money than sense I reckon. Have a brilliant weekend.
ReplyDeleteV
xxx
The wantin world of must have!!!! People buying mass produced rubbish that they never wear and then just throw it out unworn. At least when you find a vintage piece with its tags on you know it was probably purchased because the owner loved the style & bought two, or it's old shop stock. Oh I just think its heaven when it happens.
ReplyDeleteMy truly favourite dress is a 50's gingham dress I bought years ago, tags on, and she is now approaching old age and retirement. I have so many like that, some of my real treasures I lost in our shops in the earthquakes. So sad, but fond memories.
This dress is a gem and truly wonderful. She is so happy to be loved by you, the pattern is simply perfect.
I hope you have a great weekend.
Love v
I never follow fashion, I just buy clothes that I love that way they last forever. I think you have the best attitude in clothing, why throw it away just because a silly fashion magazine ( which I never buy) tell you it's out this season. As for this weekend we have a chick hatching out today, so a happy event.have a lovely weekend x
ReplyDeleteYou find the most amazing things :) It suprises me how much wonderful thing's you can find that people just give away, but then again its great for us ;) Love Love Love your dress, my mum came to my house the other day and was laughing at me for keeping some tunics we brought the same about 7 years ago, I love all my clothes ha :) you look great ...
ReplyDeleteI also love that dress, and i do keep the really precious ones close to my heart.
ReplyDeleteçhappy weekend, dear Vix
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
They're not fickle VV - they just have more money than sense ! they should visit my blog !!
ReplyDeleteI still have original dresses from 70s and 80s including Laura Ashley, and I can still fit into them at my great age !
Love that outfit by the way.
You're definitely not alone, I've got clothes in my wardrobe that I've worn for years and I'm still not sick of them. Loving your maxi! hope you have a lovely weekend. I'm planning on catching up with the boy and going to some vintage fairs with friends.
ReplyDeleteI go through my closet about twice a year and give away items that I haven't worn in years. I do have some favorites in my closet that are years old and I still love. That maxi dress was such a find. I love the colors and the pattern. What I'm really loving is your wonderful necklace. It is so unique. Just stunning.
ReplyDeleteHi beautiful,
ReplyDeleteAmazing photo's and blog
Shall we follow eachother?
Let me know on my blog and I will follow back straight away.
Also join my give-away
Love, Carmen

Well, you know what I am going to say... God knows why people spend as they do, on things they obviously don't love or they would keep them. Not for me, I like things to work for their place in my wardrobe, and that means I wear them again and again. I don't even mind that much if they look the same every time, many of my dresses do, but that's why I like them, they are easy and reliable and make me happy!
ReplyDeleteShall I talk about you now?! It would be an outrage if I didn't!
That dress is one of my absolute favourites of yours. I love everything about it. The velvet, the colours, the print, the versatility. That's a surprise, in a way, that a piece as stand-out as this dress can be styled so differently. But then you are clever like that, Vix! You look happy and glowing and gorgeous too!
Loving those frocks which are off to your next fair... If I wasn't in the process of divesting, I might make you an offer.... No! Stop me!
Quiet weekend, I think, but no doubt food and wine will feature heavily.
Love ya! xxxxxxx
Seeing as my feet haven't grown since I was 12, I have a lot of shoes that I have had forever. I keep clothes the same way. If I like it, I am going to keep it and wear it. As for the weekend, I have a massage planned and then a whole lot of socializing. Have a great weekend, Vix!
ReplyDeleteHi there!! You look amazing, love how you've combined the stripes with that gorgeous maxi dress and I really should keep hold of more too- I am trying but there is still the odd piece that goes that I regret!! Have a great weekend xxx
ReplyDeleteI love all the color. You expertly mix patterns and then astound with your grace and beauty. I do believe that if a well loved item can be worn once or more in 20 years, it's a keeper. Sometimes it waits for the perfect occasion; I have pieces in my closet from the 70's.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous green eyeshadow, it really makes your blue eyes pop!
ReplyDeleteOh, gorgeous outfit! Just loving the green and the fabulous print. I imagine you were much admired on your trip into town. Quiet weekend for me, sorting through some of Mum's things tomorrow :(
ReplyDeleteEnjoy yours.
I don't mean to needlessly stroke your ego- but lady your blog is one of the most interesting around- any age group, any country. Hands down- you show true style, innovative styling (I love how you mix "high-low", up-down, all decades to make a singularly stunning impression) and are so easy to relate to, in spite of your smoking hot bikini lovin' figure and gorgeous movie star face.
ReplyDeleteI love your message: don't follow the rules, and stay true to yourself! You show faithfulness in friendship, and by loving a frock for years, prove that to stay interesting isn't about focusing on the NEW but on the YOU.
I love you so much, Vix, my teeth hurt. Chomp!
I love your velvet maxi and you've put everything together beautifully. Gorgeous colours!
ReplyDeleteI've got much loved coats, jackets & shoes that I've had for years but in the past I've made terrible mistakes and given things away that I've worn very few times. I'm much better now because I invest a lot of time making my own.
Keep up the good work. I love your outfits - very inspiring.
Loved those colours on you! And you're right. When I buy something I love a lot, I already know its going to stick around with me for veryyy long!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous bag!
Love Shubhi's Revels!
I'm glad you featured this maxi as it is one of my all time favourites of yours and I never get sick of seeing how you remix it. I'm with you - if I buy something I intend to keep and wear it for years not just this season or just next week or even just once. And that goes for whether it is something designer, something from the high street or something from a charity shop!
ReplyDeleteLovely dress, so vibrant!
ReplyDeleteFleece line tights - that sounds great. I should have worn something like that on my outing today.
I went down south to Stamford and did a bit of chazza shopping too! I will show my stash over the next week on the blog. I didn't find a lot of vintage (except for a long back Jaeger wool dress) but I can't complain too much- the pair of never worn Dr Martens shoes for the hubby for £15 and the silk Prada shirt for £7 among other things made for a very successful trip!
It confirmed my suspicion that the place where I live is crap for charity shopping - most of the donations are Primark and the such. Not something one would be too keen on buying second hand...
Gorgeous dress. I can see why it's a favorite. I'm also enjoying a peak at your surroundings! Hope you've had a great weekend so far.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't let go of this dress either, Vix. It's beautiful and perfect for you, and you've restyled it so many different ways.
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I'm studying for a test and turning 50. Hmmmm, that doesn't sound fun at all :P
I am endlessly fascinated by the amount of brand new unworn or barely worn stuff I find in the oppies. I can't imagine being so casual amount good money like that! I guess some stuff might have been gifts, but still. I'm with you on sticking with the faithful! For all that I get excited with something new, I love my old faithfuls, in all respects! It's always a pleasure to see you do something different with that maxi, and the pendant from Dee is to DIE for!
ReplyDeleteI spent a lot of yesterday doing little sewing repairs and am just about to do a few more, now that I've prepped for tomorrows veg night......organised!!!
Love you! Helga xxxXXXxxx
That is such a marvelous dress - the style is perfect on you, and the colours are glorious. Who would have thought flowers and stripes would co-exist so wonderfully together?
ReplyDeleteI tend to keep things I've spent real money on or wait until I find someone who wants it. If I've picked up something for a couple of bucks at a thrift store and realize it's not me, I don't mind donating it back. I have gone up a couple of clothing sizes in the last 10 years so I can't fit into anything older than a few years.
We have become such a "disposable" society, with new electronics every week, cheap, poorly made clothing, and throw-away relationships. I mourn for the days where quality was valued over quantity in all areas of your life.
My heart jumped for joy and the sight of your glorious BRIGHT stripes and beautiful, beautiful maxi, then I noticed the top has an AWESOME zip down the sleeve!! I love the necklace from Dee and you know I always love to see that bag:). You're looking so fresh and beautiful after your delicious holiday my lovely:)). I thought Erica Louise's (Recycled Fashion) on recycling incentives very interesting, I don't like to sound like a do-gooder but I can't imagine going to a "proper" shop for anything I know I can get second hand. Wastage is becoming such a major personal issue and I'm proud of our family's rickety old thrifted furniture and kitchenware. Sewing!! I have NO excuse ... just have to get orf me arse;) xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteHarpers bazaar for 20p?!?!?! Bloody hell!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous dress, and I love your purchases, I need a maxi black dress for summer....!!!
Have a fab weekend!
XO
No, you're not alone Vix, I still like the same stuff I liked when I was a teenager, though new things have been added along the way. I think I've reached and gone past the stage where I like far too much stuff and can't part with any of it. That dress is timeless so why get rid of it when you still love it, and I love that bag too. xx
ReplyDeleteStunning , love this xx
ReplyDeletei love everything here.i don't get people who give away clothes after wearing them once.i have things i bought way back.it doesn't make my style boring.i love the colours and patterns here.
ReplyDeleteYour dress is stunning Vix, timeless too. It looks like a lovely day where you are! I'd far rather buy something unique that I'll have forever than high street, I used to be completely the opposite but in the last 5 years I'm completely changed about fast fashion, it makes me feel a bit sick now to be honest, nowadays I can take or leave the highstreet, give me a charity shop anyday! xx
ReplyDeleteGosh what a fantastic colour POP AND A HALF! an incredible dress and I love how you wear it Vix. looking stunning. You could certainly say I stay faithful to my clothes, still wearing those bought as a teenager, not to mention those of my mum and grandmothers, and their mothers... it's the cycle of life.
ReplyDeletelove the colours combination of your outfit <3 <3 <3
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your much-loved items being given lots of new outings. I may be only 17 but I've held onto clothes since I was 13 (I still frequently wear the things posted in my very first blog posts in 2009). My only problem is expanding width-ways from having been a very skinny younger teen - so then clothes are recycled to friends or back to charity shops. I adore the thought of you wearing this dress as a pensioner - and I just know you'll look as fabulous in it then as now.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool combination of colors and prints!
ReplyDeleteI think that we all have many pieces of clothing that we are always in love with and that we keep wearing and re-inventing.
the weekend is almost over - what did we do? spend a night in a cute hotel (amazing furniture from 1910), ha amazing food there ... met my mum and other family members and some friends of my mum i've never met before ... friday wew went thrift shoppibg and came home with filld bags ... good weeekend. sadly it's over.
ReplyDeletelove your colourfull dress. can't wait to see it again.
one word - amazing!
ReplyDeletewhat an amazing print & vivid colours, looks great on you on a winter's day, & your madeira shopper matches divinely.. & yes, I have favourites from decades ago that I pick to wear now & again, (like you I will probably never give it away) & it still looks great (to me anyhoo) & I love watching I Love Lucy, which I haven't see for decades, creates a warm feeling inside, I love the simplicity of each episode, & yes our Lucy makes me laugh all over again..
ReplyDeleteI don't understand it either - I wear stuff until it literally falls apart!
ReplyDeleteI love your incredible velvet maxi - the colours are SUBLIME on you and I LOOOVE it with the fab stripes. I am planning to wear my maxis a lot more next winter - and will definitely take your advice re thermals hidden under!
Love you more than stripes and florals! Sarah xxx

I am quite enveous that your charity shops seem to be much better than mine but your blog has inspired me to save more money (if i can manage that lol) and plan chazza shopping excursions to different areas! thank you! xx
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of beautiful black knee high boots that my Mother bought me at least 4 years ago, hats and scarves that I've owned for donkey's years, I still love so much of the music I grew up listening to so I completely empathise with your view!
ReplyDeleteAt least some people give things up though or there'd be no more chazzas for us to rummage in!!

also can't understand why people buy clothes, wear them only once or twice and give them away (or even throw them away). Love rewearing my beloved stuff, what else should I do with pieces I really love? Always have to laugh when people do these re-wearing kind of posts (like... 'oh, I wore this top 2 weeks ago, here it is again, isn't it fab that it works with a black and a blue pair of jeans?!')
ReplyDeleteThat dress and shirt combo look so amazing together I thought it was a dress from Custo or Designal But, of course, it was your fab style!;) Really love the whole look!
ReplyDeleteI've stayed the same size since high school and used to tell people at the gym I was only there to keep fitting into my clothes, cuz I didn't want to have to get new ones.;)
I hate parting with anything as I will think to wear it and then remember I don't have it any more, dang. As a result I have a ton of stuff.
My husband convinced me to donate a huge amount a while ago with "don't you want some little cute young girl to find it and love it now too, remember how happy you were? Don't you want that for someone else?" Well yes, I was a sucker for that.;) But now, I only give things away to an actual person whom I know will like it, which gives me happiness. With donating you never know where it goes and I've meet some not too nice re-salers.;)
Also for me, clothes contain memories and seeing/wearing them bring back all the memories of the things you've done in them. So they become kinda like a postcard of an event.;) I'm guessing you have lots of fond memories attached to some of your great stuff.:)
Goodness im 103 comments im a bit late answering this one. You look beautiful and so happy. So glad you liked your necklace it looks gorgeous on you. Im with you on where clothes come from i wonder who had them first and what event they bought them for. What i also love about vintage clothes is that no one else will have the same as you. I have dresses still that i have had for years my Vicky says how and i also say to her that my weight has always stayed the same so its easier to keep things to. Hugs, dee xxx
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this look

ReplyDeleteI love all your variations on a theme, Vix. Blowin' my mind with those colors. So cool. Why give up a good thing? If you both like each other, no way.
ReplyDeleteOoh I love love the dress with the stripy top, one of my favourite looks in ages. I expect to be able to hang onto clothes for years, which leads to inevitable disappointment when high street clothes fall apart after five minutes. Do you wash all your vintage in the machine? Because I object to buying overpriced high street viscose and then being told I have to bloody hand wash it as well!
ReplyDeleteOh I love that maxi and it looks great with the stripey top! It's all so vibrant!
ReplyDeleteYou look really stunning in those colours. That's one of the fabbest dresses I've ever seen you in. xx
ReplyDeletewhat a daring color combo! i love that green and orange! and you look absolutely amazing!
